Put simply the answer is no. Several have been done but with a spaceframe front end to give enough space.
Not Porsche but a much better option would be a Chevy LS1-7 which is more powerful, modern, cleaner, smaller & more tunable. And I expect would be cheaper.

The LS-1 engine is a well known transplant for the 944. The 928 engine can be made to fit, but is not economically viable.

Rennlist is your friend if you plan to do this as there are even transplant kits available.

the hard work.
the result.
fun !

It does look like the match made in heaven. The weight distribution of the Porsche, together with a much more powerful V8. But IMHO it doesn't feel right having a American engine up front....

Uncle Ferdinand would be turning in his grave.

Yep, thats the one that sprang into my mind as well. I love that car, it looks such a sleeper. It looks fairly standard with a few styling tweaks - but I bet it packs the punch where it counts.

Not sure it's worth the hassle. The turbo lump is an easier transplant & will out gun the V8 quite easily. Depends were you get your V8 from but most are around 150hp stock. Easily lifted to 200. A lot of work for another 10-15 hp over the 8v 2.5. The Porsche lump can be tuned too.

Lots of advantages of the Rover though, cheap to build & service. No cam/balance belt, possibly lighter than a 8V 944 lump as well. ANd that NOIISSSEEEE........

The Rover is a great classic engine. In an MG or errr a Rover. Like my Porsche to sound like a Porsche. Sounds like it has attitude now I got the head on.

I've never got it. Unreliable and you need to butcher the car to fit it. Then you've got something that causes problems every time you try to get it fixed, as there are few people who are experts in both 944s and Rover V8s, let alone the combined mongrel. And, for all of that, you could have got 400 BHP out of a modified turbo, albeit for a price but at least proven. And, saleable.

Err RV8's aren't unreliable. Mine on a single carb (4 barrel Carter/Webber/Edelbrock 500) & stone age dual points Mallory only let me down once & that was because Mallory had a duff batch of condensors. It did 32MPG in the 7 which is about the same weight as a 944. BHP figures are subject to mega BS but it was damn quick say 200BHP+ with a flat torque curve to boot. Never seen the conversion details but didn't think any butchery was involved to fit. As for fixing it, it is a basic pushrod V8 if you cannot fix that the I'd leave the 944 alone! As I say no cambelt grief every 36months or 36K bits are peanuts, my complete rebuild was 1200 quid including cam. Would I go that route no, I'd probably go with an LSx which will give shed loads of BHP & torque, reliability & decent fuel consumption. Current lump built by 100,000's so cheap spares & lots of knowledge. 400BHP easy & lots more if you want (probably more than a 944 will take!)

Fair enough, happy to be corrected. :D

I thought that the old Rover V8 was very old-fashioned, not as reliable and less efficient than more modern designs. I'm no expert, but head gaskets were talked about. Certainly from talking to the one person I saw with a Rover V8 in a 944, it was a pretty sorry-looking engine bay, extremely odd electrics and cooling, and he spent most of his time fixing it rather than driving it.

My point is, what real performance could you get from a Rover V8 in a 944, reliably and economically, compared to a mildly-tweaked standard turbo?

Or a mildly tweaked 2.5 8v n/a??? 200HP isn't much these days.
