So thanks to DA-EVO on here and a PH member my new project arrived yesterday.

It's a 1988 944S which is generally tidy and has a nice chunk of history


Most things on the car are working but haven't had a good look around underneath yet but in the history is a receipt for new fuel lines (which is what I'm in the process of replacing on my other car) so that's one less job to do.

I had a bit of a moment whilst removing the car from the trailer and managed to catch the door so a new one has been purchased and I'll be picking it up on Saturday.


Interior is pretty tidy



The engine however is less healthy


It has had a rebuilt head recently but the problem lies at the other end where a conrod has killed itself and thrown part of it through the side of the sump. At some point I intend to pull the engine out and take a look at what can be rescued from the engine and price it up against a replacement used motor.

Just got to try and focus on the ongoing project and not get too distracted by this one which is sitting there with a current MOT and only needs the engine sorting where the other car is part way through a complete overhaul.

Well done Madro so what did it cost to get down to you in the end les then the self hire option I guess?

Is this for salvaging parts or another resto? Good luck either way

Got the car for £300, not including delivery costs.

This one will be back on the road eventually but I think the other project will have to get there first.

£300 ! the wheels must be nearly that on their own Good luck on finding the bottom end, I believe the 'S' engine is pretty unique, as such you cant use doner parts from an 8V or an S2. It may be quicker to find a complete S2 lump (along with AFM and ECU)and drop it in.

Currently got my eye on a couple of S engines on ebay.

I'd still like to rebuild the engine just for the experience. Shouldn't be too hard to get my hands on a new con rod (providing only 1 needs replacing) the sump might be a bit more of an issue but at least then I'd know that it'd have nice new bearings and can inspect other parts whilst it's out of the car.

The rods maybe grouped in matched sets, sometimes you can get away with replacing a single one other times not. You'll need to check the weights. If it has thrown a rod I'd guess the crank is damaged probably scrap, together with the bore & maybe the piston & head.

Looks a good deal though, I was tempted. The burgundy interior would get mine sorted definitely.

Armed with that information I'll definitely keep an eye on the cheap near to me engine on ebay.

I'm hoping the head will be OK as it was recently rebuilt. Apparently the engine was still running after throwing part of the rod through the sump (although very very briefly I hope) so there should be some life left in there somewhere.

Looking at the pics, it looks identical to mine inside and out (apart from the wheels). It even has those nice all velour seats, so no worrys about the infamous bolster wear

So your not just going to rob the engine out of yours then. They do pop up on ebay usually with dead cams. So if the head on yours is ok could be a cheap fix.

The plan was to put my engine in until I noticed it was an S. With my 8v being a 1983 it would need a newer fuel rail in order to connect up all the fuel hoses and then I'd have to change the ECU and whatever else was changed when they switched from square to oval dash so getting my hands on a used S engine is probably much easier.

You could take the ECU & AFM from your 8v & transplant it with the engine. You could also take the fuel rail complete as well assuming it's ok. But if the S has had a top end overhaul I would hold out for a short engine. Will cost you a few quid in gaskets & seals but it will be a lot of fun when it's finished. You could always break the first one for spares to fund the new one! Or start a collection.

The 8v fuel rail isn't compatible with the fuel lines on the new car as being an 83 car the fuel lines arrive from under the brake servo whereas the newer cars come in from the wheel arch on the other side of the engine bay.

Still keeping an eye on an S engine on ebay and hopefully it'll go for nice and cheaply, just need to figure out a way to transport it.

It's not a big deal to extend them. Or just run new lines from the tank. Probably needs them anyway. Pallet frieght will be around £60 I think from memory. But it will be heavy so you will need 4 guys to lift if off the van or a fork truck!

Fuel lines have been replaced in the past according to the service history. Also the stuck bolt I'm battling with in the other car has been replaced also!

New engine isn't far from me so was going to borrow a little trailer from my Dad so should be able to slide the engine into it then strap it down from there. Somebody has already offered help if I can't get it on and will also get his mates to come and help if we still can't manage it

Then it can stay in the trailer until I can get my hands on an engine crane to do the swap.
