Post subject:  Spark plug change
Just changed the plugs in the '44 and there was a small amount of oil around the base of the plugs. Nothing on the actual electrode but definately oil in each pot - visible with a torch after removing the plug lead.

How's it got in there?? :dontknow:

I understand it's quite common to dab a little bit of oil on the plug before fitting. No idea why but I had the same thing. I didn't put oil on the plug when I fitted new ones but remember reading somewhere on here that it was quite normal to find a little bit on a plug.

Cam covers on all (Older) DOHC engines tend to leak a little oil down the tubes to the plugs. My Fiat managed a good tablespoons worth in the 20k it took to get round to changing them. my S2 manages a tiny bit.

Could be cam covers, but often caused by poor spark plug seals (if the plugs have been removed a few times the copper seals get compressed) or slightly loose plugs.

In my 30 years in the motor trade, can't say that its was ever normal practice to oil plug threads. Remember that spark plugs earth by the threads

I always put copper slip on my spark plug threads, but the oil,s likely to be from the plug seals in the cam cover.

No point in using Copperslip.

Spark plugs should simply have their threads clean and torqued correctly.

If you have taper seat plugs, It can cause the plugs to shear when removing them.

I've always used coppa slip for plug, ain't sheered one yet but they've all come out OK later!

I'm quite impressed how little my s2 leaks out of the cam cover, shame it Pi55es out of the balance shaft cover. :roll:
