Hi

I have a 91J 944 S2 which has developed a grinding noise coming from the back of the car which appeaers to be getting worse. The noise is at its worst when the car is coasting, (i.e going down hill, no acceleration ) but goes away once you start to accelarate again. The noise is also apparent when stationary but goes away if you engage the clutch.
Anybody come across this problem before and if so what was the outcome ?

Regards

Tony.

I'm not one of the experts, however it sounds like the gearbox. When you press the clutch it releases the drive to the gearbox, which is why the noise will stop. Have checked/changed the gearbox oil?

Sounds like gearbox or torque tube but it will need further investigation. If it is the box best bet is to find another & swap it as they are very expensive to rebuild. Rick Woods Stockport did one last year & it cost over 3K to sort out. Usually it's the diff that goes first. Does yours have an LSD? Check the rear wheel bearings & cvs first. If it is the box start looking for a good second hand one. They are out there. If your not sure what your doing I'd take it somewhere like Hartech for a diagnosis which shouldn't cost you so much. They could also give you a good idea what it will cos to fix & help you source a new box if thats what you need.

i had this problem, a gearbox later , still there , i later found out it was the rubber damper on the friction plate of the clutch, does the car feel like its clunking when you ease off acceleration and jumps harsh when back to acceleration again, also its very noisey when coasting in 2nd gear more than others ( sorry about the spelling, im a mechanic not a writer ,lol :D )

another thing to check , if you slightly press the clutch pedal but not disengage the clutch, i.e just take up the freeplay so the arm engages the thrust bearing and it goes quieter, then your more than likely looking at a clutch. hope this helps
