your handbrake is best ajusted at the rear wheels, all the ajuster the handle end is good for is cable freeplay, many ppl choose the lazy option and ajust the cable, it will work but in the long run its worth doing right.
take off your rear wheels and look at the center of the disks. oh and slide off the spacer so your only looking at the disk, there will be a small rubber bung or just a hole, depending wether the bung was put back last time

,if you get a small torch and start turning the disk by hand you will see what looks like a cog and a threaded bar, this is the handbrake shoe ajuster , using a flat blade screwdriver wind the ajuster out untill the brake disk can no longer be turned , do this both sides , pull the handbrake on and off a few times to check for travel , then recheck the disks, they now should be able to turn with some resistance, if not wind the ajuster off one movement, the handbrake should now be fine and not need attention your quite some time .
i know it sounds hassle but do it right first time everytime and your car will just get better and better
