Hi All,
Got a bit of a leak on my power steering, I jacked up the car, removed the under tray and gave the power steering pipe work and the cooler rad a good degreasing, after a wash down with water it’s all looking nice and clean, once it’s all dried off I will start her up and try and see where it’s leaking.

It looks like it could be around the cooler rad area, if it is and knowing my luck at the moment it probably will be  what sort of cost are they and where’s and best place to get one.

Probably the PAS cooling coil under the OS wheel arch is corroded. They generally start to weep then it becomes Vesuvius! If it dumps all the fluid then the pump will seize QED. SO worth getting sorted, new coils are around 120 quid from memory.

Cheers Jim,

I do need to top up the fluid as it's just at the bottom of the dip stick, what’s the correct/best power steering fluid.

From memory it is Dexron ATF aka Auto gear box oil. As I say do not let it run low or dry otherwise the pump dies instantly. My ex had a Granada where the PAS pipe broke & she thought the burning smell from the PAS belt melting would wait until it got home

For £8.99 I think I will give Wynn's a go, cheers.

Exactly my thoughts at the time, this was last year and its been fine since, even been to OPC for service since and no leak picked up, I put about half the tin in

Without sounding a complete donut where is the filling point and where is the dip stick for the PAS ?

Benefits of the club even the most straightforward question will not be mocked and also I bet there are others who want to know !

Power Assisted Steering

The hydraulic assistance system allows effortless steering under all driving conditions. Slight hissing or squeaking sounds during sharp turns (turning steering wheel from lock to lock) are normal and do not indicate a defective steering mechanism.

If the engine is not running, power assisted steering is no longer effective. You can continue to steer the car but more effort will be required to turn the steering wheel.

Checking the fluid level

The hydraulic fluid level should be checked at regular intervals. The fluid reservoir is mounted on the right wheel housing in the engine compartment.

1. Unscrew cap from reservoir and wipe dipstick with a lintfree cloth.

2. Let engine run at idle speed. Reinstall cap and unscrew again. The fluid level should be between the upper and lower mark on the dipstick.

If necessary, top up with ATF-Dextron®.

3. Reinstall cap and handtighten securely.

Put the Wynn's power steering leak stopper in yesterday, seems to be OK :D
Question, as my clutch has gone (booked in next Monday at long last :D :D ) I can only drive the car in and out of the garage, is the fluid pumping through the system when the engine is running or is it only when you turn the wheel.

It is pumping continuously whenever the engine runs.

Yep, it only cost £8.99 and I still have over after of tin left, it looks like the hoses are on their way out due to age, but having just paid out for a new clutch this leak stopper is great which gives me time to look at the power steering later in the year.

Thanks for letting me know about Wynns
