Could be the gauge. Take the wires off & see what happens to the gauge. You don't need to drain the oil to change the sender. But check the gauge first.

Sounds like a bad connection, if the wire comes off it'll indicate full scale. Check the connections first as the sender isn't cheap! And you don't need to drain the oil for the oil pressure sender.

Hi,

Unfortunately this is also a trick that unscrupulous sellers use to sell 944's. They remove or cut one of the wires on the rear of the gauge so it always reads 5 bar oil pressure. A good check to make sure this hasn't been done is by putting the ignition into the position so the dash warning lights are lit. The oil pressure gauge should read about 1 bar. Once the engine is started it should be around 4.5 - 5 bar. On a warmed up engine, it should be around 2.5 - 3 bar.

Hi, was just about 2 ask the same thing. you may remba, I recently changed mine which was sticking at 4 bar, along with my rad temp sdnssor. the oil sender was from Porsche shop, £65 or so and the lug snap when doing the nut up with my fingers, hadn't even used a spanner.( I perpussly tryed 2 brack the lug from the old one. And it bent the spanner just shows how shit the porsch shop brand was. I managed 2 fix it but using a nut of the old one 2 join the lug bak togther.

Pressure was Reading 4 on ideal, 5 under accelration and 4.5 when braking. It never droped below 4. Other day it started bouncing and fixering. I reach down thought the engine and moved it. Now its also just stuck at above 5.

Do you have a square (924) dash or an oval dash model? They may behave differently.

I know that when I turned the key on my early dash (before I had the engine running) it would jump straight to 5 so I assume that's what the dial reads from the sender by default and the pressure increases resistance on the circuit. Which would suggest to me a dead sender rather although I'm happy to be proven wrong.

Clarks garage doesn't offer a method of testing the sender but it does say how to replace it, hope that helps.

I had a 924S which is basically the same as a square dash early model I believe and my oil pressure gauge never moved until the engine was running, before that it read zero or on the stop, then once started it read 4.5-5b.

Both Design 911 and Type911 have them for £20-30, however EurocarParts looks to be the cheapest

Mine was a right pain, 2 get off. Could you solider the cable on? Lug only acts as a connection. Could save u a lot if wrist ack. I had 2 put my arm thought the under tray, and have someone guild the spanner from above. The lugs on the one on my car was very strong. Not like that shit from£65 pshop. So I'm guessing cheap ones are just that cheap! Pshop over priced.

So 4-5 bar Reading was still not a working sender?

Yes t3rra. As Jim has pointed out, a faulty sender will read full scale deflection i.e. 5 bar. This is why unscrupulous sellers can hide oil pressure problems by basically knackering the sender or cutting/disconnecting wires to it. Bad for a unwitting buyer unfamiliar with 944's. A good check to see whether this has been done is to switch the ignition on but engine not running or cranking. The oil pressure should read approx 1 bar without the engine running. If it reads 5 bar without the engine running, you know you've got a oil sender problem or wiring issue.

With the ignition on but without the engine running mine reads 5 bar but when it is running then it behaves fine.
