Post subject:  Plastic cam belt cover - needed ?

Fellow Porscheans,

Recently changed water pump and found it was the original one from '86 with the original smaller idler and lack of guide rail etc. After chatting to Bert from Berlyn about different sized idlers he said that the plastic cover needs to be cut away to make the larger idler fit and kindly sent Jim a manual update showing where to cut.

It seems as if large chunks are to be removed to the rear and it make we think about what actually does the plastic cover do? I thought to possible protect the belts from spillages or genral engine crud?

So, anyone know its purpose given that so much must be cut away?

thanks,

Matt

Matt, the 944 is early days of cambelts & I assume did the half clam covers as belt (sorry) & braces. Taking the rear belt cover off wouldn't give the front one anything to bolt to & also wouldn't offer any protection to the belt as Terry says. I was shocked when I saw how much is cut away to be honest!

This is a 2 page doc here is the first one.

Can an old part be interchanged with a newer style one? I only ask as one of the threads on mine has come apart so ideally I'd be wanting to change it anyway and if a newer style one would fit straight on then that'd make life even easier.

It can but it means stripping off everything. Whereas I think Mr Stanley can be used in situ with the front cover off. Yes you can interchange covers otherwise.

I thought it had to be removed to do a water pump change anyway? I haven't really looked that far into it yet so I could be wrong.

That's ok then. I'm not mental enough to go around changing the rear cover without having the required parts off for something else.

Yes we did but to get the cover off now would mean a complete front end strip again which is painful to say the least.
