Post subject:  New owner, new suspension!!

Hi there,

I will be picking up an '87 944S next Monday and am intending to get on with a rebuild of the suspension more or less immediately, as I hope to track the car this summer. I've been looking at the many options available and, whilst I want to take the car on track occasionally, I don't want an out and out track / race suspension setup.

I'm quite liking the look of the Bilstein B6 shock inserts, which are available at just over £100 per corner from Euro Performance and seem to offer a good compromise between standard ride height / road holding and more sporty characteristics when loaded up on track. I'd intend to run a set of replacement OEM front springs with these for starters, rather than lowering the car (which is already running on arch filling 17" Cup wheels). Does anyone have any experience with this setup and should things like the top-mounts be replaced at the same time?

Regarding anti-roll bars, are there any upgrade options available on the 'S', front and rear? Does anyone have any recommendations regarding targeted poly-bushing or just doing the whole lot? Can the rear torsion beams be refurbished at all? Are there any good front / rear strut braces available?

Sorry, so many questions...any help or advice much appreciated!! :)

S2 ARBs should bolt straight on as long as it has all the S2 mounting stuff with it, get some new poly bushes in it as well. Leave the front wishbone bushes standard but change the back ones for 968 caster mounts, makes a big difference if you have 17 inch wheels on it.

As far as I can make out:

944 87> 2.5/2.7 got 15mm rear ARB and 21.5mm front ARB
944 S2/Turbo/968 got 17mm rear ARB and 26.8mm front ARB
968 MO30 got 19mm rear ARB and 30mm front AR

Can any one confirm this? I've also seen a 25.5mm front ARB listed, which cars got this?

Think I'm settled on the Bilstein B6 shock inserts and some selective poly-bushing with the 968 castor mounts, uprated ARBs (probably 944 S2 as suggested above) and standard front springs (if I can find new ones!).

Out of interest, what are common upgrades on the the rear torsion bar assembly other than a thicker rear ARB and uprated shock inserts? Looks like the 968 and MO30 equipped 944 S2 / Turbo got thicker 25.5mm rear torsion bars (standard was 24.5mm?), which Porsche Shop have available.

Interesting rool bar sizes. Mine is a 87 2.5 lux & has a 25.5 mm front & AFAIK it has never been swapped from standard.
I even had an arguement with the supplier as he didn't believe me! That was after I measured it....

Mine has 25.5 fronts. (87) If you fit the adjustable rear drop links & the stiffener brackets to the front you don't need to upgrade the bars as you can adjust the preload on the rears & the brackets make the fronts 3 times stiffer anyway. Thats better than the MO30 set up. Lindsey racing sell them. Better to spend the money on shocks. Mine stays flat no matter how hard I throw it into a corner. :)
