Hi

I've just got a 968 Sport and very happy with it. You know what it's like with a new car, looking and listening out for anything that might be a problem...

I've noticed a noise from the steering at low speed and when turning the steering wheel to/from full lock, when parking, for example. The noise doesn't happen every time, and is probably best described as like a wooden chair being dragged along a hard floor. What could be the cause? Anything serious?

Could it just be the power steering belt slipping? Quick to fix, by replacing the belt or retensioning?

Check your power steering fluid levels as this is usually the cause, if its too low it will make a noise while turning at low rev's. Although i have found that there is always a little 'weeering' noise under load anyway, so a little bit of noise is prefectly normal.

When was the fluid last changed? It degrades over time & can cause the symptoms you describe. Like clutch fluid it's often overlooked but needs replacing. If theres no leaks I'd just change the fluid & leave it alone.

I get it in my S2 sometimes. Could also be a small leak. I read somewhere that air getting sucked in can cause a noise. If you do need to top up check what type of fluid to use, I don't think it is regular power steering fluid. In the 944 s2 it is Automatic Transmission Fluid DIII. Not sure about the 968.

All 944s and 968 use ATF for PAS fluid. Always worth changing, you will notice a difference,

Thanks for all your replies. :D Didn't manage to get to it in daylight. Will have a good look over the weekend and change the fluid too. Will let you know how I get on.
