After replacing my cylinder head I put a new thermostat in, I could have sworn it had 87c stamped on it, is this too high? Its just that the temp. gauge reads just off the top white line, it used to be well under half way. I'm pretty sure I've got all the air out now, so is this normal for new stats or should I get a cooler one? btw the cars purring like a kitten now (hope I'm not jinxing myself) |

Every time I've had a new thermostat its raised the needle nicely so that normal conditions has it sitting just above horizontal about half way between the two lines. Over time they get weak and start opening earlier so the needle gradually drops down towards the first line. The handbook says normal conditions are anywhere between the two lines. Sorry can't help with what it should be stamped as

Hi  Most thermostats are around 88 degrees..plus or minus 2 degrees... so its fine...you CAN get low temp ones (usually 72 degrees) for some Porsches but you need a particular reason for these.....and dont forget once a thermostat is OPEN it makes no difference at all.... All the best Brett

Had this on a Turbo before, guage was well up. Take the temp guage out and clean the pins, there was obviously some corrosion on them, once cleaned, the guage sat just above the half way between the 2 marks! Alasdair |

I agree with PaulSmith here. Mine goes to the 2nd white line in traffic (after being sat quite a while) where the fans will kick in for a short while (about a minute if that). Otherwise it sits somewhere between the 1st white marker and just over halfway on a run. Running a new thermostat may show other flaws in your system though, like an aged pressure cap (but these are relatively inexpensive). |
