If I squeeze the top radiator hose on my car with the engine off I can hear the thermostat moving a little a long with the water from the hose, is this right? I would have thought that it should be clamped in place so that water can't get past (although under pressure it should probably hold it in place).

I plan on flushing the coolant out soon and inspecting things like the water pump whilst there so was wondering if I should be checking out the mounting of the thermostat at the same time?

sounds perfectly normal to me.
With one exception - I have heard of people putting the thermostat back in without the clip (!) why?). then the whole thermostat would possibly jump back and forward.
Some thermostats have a little hole and in the hole is a small clip, standard 944 ones don't but a thermostat is a thermostat and they all tend to fit - this rattles in other cars.

Another issue could be the thermostat not properly seated and the clip holding it but not in its groove letting it flap back and forth. The thermostat has to seat on a rubber seal at the back of the waterpump ( I'm not talking about the outer o ring) this can dissapear as well...

Thanks for the advice. I'll pull it apart at the weekend and have a look about and if all it not well I'll just leave it in pieces and order some new bits up.

If you get it out, probably owth putting a new one in. Make sure you get the right thickness of rubber mounting ring, there are a thick and a thin one available! Most take the thin one, don't ask me how I know!

Thanks for the advice, I'll order the bits up from Exeter OPC so will hopefully get the right bits as they seem to know their onions down there.
