Hi folks

I've got an 84 2.5 Lux (great car), which so far, I've found to be easy to get parts for. There seem to be loads of early 944s being broken and parts seems to be easy enough to get from Porsche.

I'm thinking of getting a 968, but am concerned that because not so many of them were made, parts will be hard to get hold of. I guess there won't be many in breakers' yards, but do Porsche have a good stock of spares? Should I worry about this?

Most parts are the same as a 944 although Porsche will tell you the car is over 80% different, if you get in to heads, blocks and gearboxes it might be a different story though.
Brakes, suspension, belts, waterpumps etc all the same.

I believe some of the 968 specific bits around the Variocam are NLA, I seem to remember reading that a while ago.

As a 944 owner I expect you know what to look for?

Just be very careful about the cams, check they have been replaced or inspected recently they tend to wear - £1k+ for parts alone.

Thanks, Rich. I'll try to find out when they (variocam, belts, .. ?) were last replaced or checked. I'm expecting it to have a fairly good service history, so hoping for the best. I've been reading about the variocams losing teeth after only 50k miles or so. Don't really know what to look out for (though I've read some buyers' guides). Main things, I suppose are: rust, strange noises which might be dodgy variocam.

I remember reading that these cars (later 944s and I assume 968s too, but not early 944s) have some sort of problem with the brake mechanisms - plate lift. Is that easy to check for (without taking off the wheels)?

I got my 2.5 only 6 months ago, and have enjoyed doing about 3000 miles in it so far. It goes really well, and I really like it. Would be happy keeping it for a while. It's just that I sudddenly have a bit more money for a car, so thought I might look into something a bit more powerful. Not keen on a 986. I quite like the Carrera 3.2 911s (mmm http://pistonheads.com/sales/1552045.htm), but think they're a bit expensive for what they are. I've never driven a 3.2, but suspect they might feel a bit antiquated.

So 968 seems like the one for me... will let you know how it goes.

I had a look at the car yesterday. A bit too much rust for me. I wouldn't expect there to be much at all on a car from 94.

Even my first car, a Peugeot 106 from 96 (now my dad's car) doesn't have any rust on it, and I always kept it outside and didn't even wash it very often. So I wouldn't expect much rust on a galvanised shell unless it had been exposed to a very harsh environment.

Got to be on to the next one, I think.

Assuming the PSA cars have genuine panels on they, they seem to be the exception to the rule regarding rust. Must be down to them dipping the cars in Olive oil . My '89 205 GTi has pretty much no rust on it at all. Look at the Escorts and Golfs of that era in comparison....
