Post subject:  Oil Leak????

Hi all,
Got an oil leak which has just turned up out of the blue, my car has been off the road since last September due to clutch problems, I have been starting it up and driving out of the garage every two weeks to get the engine up to temperature but today I have noticed a patch of oil on the garage floor just in front of the driver’s side front wheel, it seems to be running down inside the front bumper as there is a small oil slick in the bottom of the bumper in the wheel arch. Can someone point out where this may be coming from, many thanks.

Is it definitely engine oil? Could be a power steering fluid leak - I had leaking connections underneath the power steering fluid reservoir. Just needed two new jubilee clips.

Hi,

I'd have a good poke around with a torch first. If you can lay on a sheet of cardboard or something you may be able to detect where the leak is coming from. If the fluid is dark red, it is more than likely power steering fluid. If not oil, perhaps clutch fluid if this has been a problem area.

Lo,
Thanks for the quick reply, just been out with a torch and yes it’s the power steering
The pump looks ok no fluid below it, the leak is at the front can’t see from the engine bay looking down, looks like you have to remove the wheel and the inner wheel arch to reach this area.
From above there are two rubber pipes it looks like it may be a poor connection on one of these, it’s got a jubilee clip but doesn’t look like its only half way on the connector.

Be glad it's the power steering but not the rack. Worst case would be a new high pressure hose & there about £50. Lots cheaper than the camshaft seal or anything else it could have been!

Power steering cooler is here. They are prone to corroding & leaking. Be careful of driving it as if it lets go completely then the fluid dissapears & then the PAS seizes!

Cheers Jim,

The car is off the road with a broken clutch and moment, Iv checked the fluid level and its down to about 1/3.
I alway have problems getting under the front of the car, must be my beer reservoir  do drive-on car ramps work with the low front bumper? or is there another way.
Ps. I dont have time to go on a diet

The 944 will be tight on ramps I use a trolley jack just behind the front wheel bearing on the rear of the wishbone mount.
Jack & Axle stand then do other side.
