It could just be the heat shield around the outside of the Cat. Mine did this about 10 years ago and I pulled it off with no adverse effects ever since. If it is the insides of the Cat finally breaking down, then as long as your car is older than a K reg you can have the Cat cut out and replaced by a welded in piece of pipe (Normally around £100 all in depending on were you go)

The heat sheild started to rattle on mine shortly after I bought it. I took it off, but just watch that you don't park it up on long dry grass in the summer. I think the heat sheild was to stop the car bursting into flames in just this sort of scenario.

I later got rid of the cat all together for a stainless steel bolt on bypass section.

For those of you who ditched the cats on your S2s, how much louder was it without the cat and the straight cat in place? I am running a non cat S2, but the silencer probably doesn't have miles more life left in it. I know a replacement silencer from Porsche is £600 on a non cat S2. Call me a skinflink, but I am trying to weigh up the alternatives (I believe the cat section may not fit it, ProMax's Cat Bypass requires the downpipe to be cut, other options are welcome).

It is louder, but not overly so, and nowhere near some of the 'boy racer' exhausts on small hatchbacks.

I am not one for loud exhausts on simple 4 pot engines and I find mine bearable without the cat and do like the extra rorty noise in the upper reaches of the rev range 8)
