Post subject:  Cambelt and Water pump advice prices etc

My recently purchsed and lovely running 944 Turbo is missing one vital thing :bom:
evidence of a 'recent' cambelt change. It was changed well less than 10,000 miles ago but this was several years.

So , I have no problem with getting it replaced and my chosen specialist will charge me about £300 for the job.

the thing is he quite rightly mentioned the usual " may be best to change the water pump if keeping the car " to which I said how much . He told me only another 30 mins or so to change the pump plus the cost of ther pump of course.

You will most likely know they are NOT cheep and he was shocked when I said I think around £250 to £300. I have since checked and the cheepest so far is Euro Car parts 270 inc vat , ( £394 from Porsche Cambs )
any other suggestions ( like dont do it would be nice lol )

Cheers Mas

I'd be interested to hear responses to this as I have no paperwork for mine so don't know how old the water pump is. I know it doesn't have the guide rail that the newer style does but considering how many other expenses I have ahead of me with this car the water pump is one I could do without.

Be careful buying cheap parts. If the pumps no good it's a lot of work to swap it. There are recon pumps & outright new ones. I've gone for an outright new one as the quality of the recon ones leaves a lot to be desired. Ordered from JM garage for a fool proof warranty. Having had 3 useless power steering pumps I've learned that lesson the hard way. Half an hour to fit sounds very optimistic. If the studs are seized in with dis-similar metal corrosion it could take a lot longer.

Turbo requires a turbo pump, I had mind changed as the last service history was 9 years ago, however at the cost of £700.
that was everything, rollers e.c.t as u don’t want 2 b paying again 2 take it all off 2 change something which has failed under the tension of new belts. This is a major problem 4 this cars. However I got a peter Morgan 944 924 book for xmass and he states that if new later style belts and pump used the belts should last the life of the car? Maybe that they just need check and retention. mine came off and looked just as new as the ones going on. White writing is still on the belts and my power steering belt look in much a worse state. However it failure cost that u got 2 think off. I’ve heard storeys of them failing at idle. And if your car is new 2 u chances r your goner drive it quite hard 4 a while. These cars seem cheap. But there maintenance is not, and a lot of the time it hard 2 justifies spending that much money based on the worth price. My 1988 s brought $2400 from a mechanic in Cornwall has cost £6000 ish in 6 months wouldn’t really like 2 add it. But like a good looking things e.g woman, costs

I can sell you a new (not recon) pump for a Turbo for £175 shipped to your door! That includes gasket and also the new right angle water pipe take off with O ring! Have 3 here in stock! I have a 200,000 mile car here that still has a good pump on it (changing it anyway with belts and rollers!), a new looking pump on a scrapper 2.5 I got in was nice and shiny new but with a rumbly bearing, that's what happens when you over tighten those belts!

I have no intention of putting a nasty pump on I can assure you. I just want to get a good price for one. I have hunted round and am greatfull for the tips. I'll be buying the OEM pump and a cambelt kit if I do have them both done. 'Max I'll be paying delivered for an OEM pump appears to be 240 inclusive. I have so many receipts re the car I am going to re check tonight and make sure whats been done but I will do whatever should be done to protect the car.

I think someone found that Frazerparts were quoting a good price for the belt kits.
30 minutes is hugely optimistic to change a pump, it has from memory 10 bolts & the chances of all of them coming out after a few years without breaking is pretty low.

IMO, Get the belts from GSF which use OE bits (Dayco belts and INA tensioners). They are also the cheapest (around £155 for my S2 (5 rollers and 2 belts)).

Water pump I cannot help with. But if your current one is fine, leak free and you decide to stick with it, put in some half decent antifreeze mixed at the correct level.

The garage I used snapped studs when they changed the pump on my 86 944 ... turned into an expensive problem.
Might be worth asking them to do everything possible to avoid this!

Get belts and rollers from Euro Car Parts, same as the GSF ones being INA tensioners and Dayco belts which are OE equipment! Porsche don't make belts or rollers, they just put them in very expensive boxes with even more expensive stickers. I can buy a turbo thermostat from Berlyn for £8 and from Porsche for £22 inc VAT. Parts are identical and made by the same company!

Belts will be dual sourced so Gates, Conti, Dayco all OK. Again limited suppliers of idlers & tensioners so again all would be OK.

Mas

Give Promax a call, have bought waterpump and belts from them recently. They were the cheapest at the time and will always help you out with advice.

I have certainly been told that this is the way to go, probably from an indie who changed belts & the pump started leaking & then had to do it again at his own cost!
Retension I've heard anything from 300-2000miles. Mine was was done at 2K & seemed OK. I ven heard of one "Specialist" who said to the owner "they didn't need checking as we get the tensioner right when we first installed it"
