Paul my ARO & I debate this endlessly.

You will spend more money on buying & keeping a Boxster over a 944 assuming the 944 is a toy will it be that much better a toy than the 944?
The 944 is much easier to work on than a Boxster which is designed to be maintained on a ramp from underneath so harder to work on on a jack on the drive.

QED stick with the 944 you know it makes sense 8)

It’s a question that more and more people are asking as the prices of early Boxsters fall below the cost of a really good S2/Turbo/Cab.

I don’t think the prices have dropped quite low enough yet to make it a genuinely fair comparison though; the same money right now will either get you a very good ’44 or a very ropey Boxster. Give it another year or two though, and we’ll probably be talking even money for a decent example of either car.

Stick with the 944 IMO. Yours is a clean car, and I would persevere with it. I reckon you'll prefer the Boxster for a while, but that's it.

Hi,

IMO I'd stick with the '44. This car still turns heads today and is far more practical than a Boxster. People always approach me at car shows saying they really regret selling there '44's. I can fit the kids + car seats in mine. Its my daily work horse and it sure puts a smile on my face everyday when I drive it.

:D :D :D

Why are you considering a change Alan ? better the devil you know (& love).
I agree with previous posts knowing people who really regret selling their 944 (some even buying them back later).
I started with a 944 (2.7) 6yrs ago & loved it (& got hooked!)
I also loved its beautiful replacement, a 944 S2 Cab and
I really really LOVE its replacement my 944 Turbo (tastefully tweeked!)

Ever considered a 944 upgrade ? 944S2? 944Turbo?

I think that after careful consideration and the great advice recieved,It would be better to either stick with the lux or upgrade to a s2 maybe?
Are the s2 models much different than my Lux?
thank you
Alan

S2 has more power
Joking aside the 968 route is a good idea and it has a 6 speed box I believe or tiptronic option. Then you could always do a turbo RS engine conversion and the turbo RS look etc etc.......... :love4: :love4: :love4:
Love spending other peoples money

is yours a 2.5 Lux ?
I initially spent Months trying to decide & went for the 2.7 Model with greater Torque.
It depends on your Budget and what you would really hanker after.
See if you can get a ride in a few Tipec Members cars/discuss pros & cons at a Club meet! (Tipec Show etc) or Track Day.
The S2 does have plenty of Torque & the Coupe (IMHO) is a Better Ride than the Cab. I really appreciate the looks of the 968 but it took me 6 Months to finally decide to get a modified Turbo as I had been really impressed with the performance (+simpler 8 valve single cam design). The Turbo can be modified at reasonable cost, are very tractable when not on boost, so can be leisurely or exciting!
Have a look at Hartech web site for a Very good technical background to the 944/968 models - very enlightening.
I also contacted JMG for advice, well known for their 944 Turbo projects, my preference is obviously the Turbo.
Best of luck with your quest.

Some S2's have more power. If your lux isn't fast enough what does it do at the wheels. Have you bothered to find out? Is the ignition spot on. Are the injectors clean. etc. Difference can be as much as 40hp. You would need to do the same for an S2 if you went that way.

I dont have a problem with the Lux performance it does what I want power wise. The only worry buying a s2 would be to get one with good history to try to avoid unwanted bills.

I have an S2 which I love. I think though in hindsight I would buy a late turbo. Black with black leather. The price on the S2 just seems to be slipping away at the moment while the turbos seem more desirable.

The difference is that the S2 has only come into the crutches of cheaper hands recently which is why only now a few bad examples are surfacing. The 2.5 has been in cheaper hands for a while with its benefits being mentioned (cheaper brake parts being one). As you've said in the past J.J people need to realise that there is no such thing as a free lunch, sorry, cheap Porsche (even the 924s have some pricey parts).

If you get a good S2, yes they are quick. Mine's quicker than my old 306 GTi-6 was with the new engine (cam timing done, in the last week I've changed the ignition leads and plugs (plugs from the new engine were horrifically pricey Nology Silvers (I felt like a cheapskate putting in OE Bosch plugs!)). Mine is a factory decat but I can't see that making much difference (it sounds nicer without the cat I admit to one I've heard with).

If you want to know how fast an S2 is, I can take you for a spin in mine if you wish (eithe at a Beckett's meet or maybe when we both have free time). I have it on good authority that it pulls very well for an S2. Fuel economy and brake parts prices is where you may suffer on an S2. But then I have used mine in town etc on occasions where my other daily is in use as backup (alot with the company car failing twice in a week).
