i have a knocking noise coming from the damper. HiQ say there is play in the struts where there fix.. and that they will both need replacing. Surely it has a bush at the end of the strut that is replaced instead?? appreciate anyhelp. notice it was an advisory item on a past mot (ten K ago) and said "macpherson strut has slight play in the sliding bush or gland".. to me that suggests that there is a bush that can be replaced instead. were HiQ telling me porkies?

my car is a 1987 944 non turbo

Do they mean the top mount or the strut where the piston enters? I presume they mean where the piston enters the strut.
TBH they all have slight play in the piston into the strut, the question is whether it is excessive? The ones I changed last year had over a 1/4" play & that was BAD!
Personally I wouldn't take HiQ's opinion & would ask someone who actually knows the 944 & whether it is normal or not.
If there is excessive play then the struts will need replacing as the bush isn't replaceable.
It will also need the geometry checked & adjusted afterwards.

As Jim said, could be damper play, could be top mounts...

if your in the midlands, let me know, we'll get it in and have a look for you.

Struts not too bad for stock Boge from GSF. Top mounts are silly money. Quality repro ones from America are £150 ish & you can get them on ebay. To check the strut properly means taking it off so you need a good mechanic. Rarely found at HiQ  Like Jim says.
If your '44s on original shocks a new set will make a world of difference. It did to mine. :)

As will a geometry check! Top mounts for 86 on cars are £210 + VAT each  Early ones are a VW bit & much cheaper
The struts for Pauls car came from Bert at Berlyn & were reasonable money, but shop around.

hm. i did pm you but as usual the messages just stay in the outbox for reasons i don't know. this is what i wrote:

I have no money at all until after the 22nd. Having read my post if the work involves what HiQ said (replacing both struts) are you able to better their price? If i have to replace the struts would aftermarkets ones be chaeaper/better? I find the suspension very wallowey/soft at the mo.. I had an 2.7 1989 previously and remember that car had brill handling. In my current 1987 (which i think is on origional dampers) i find the handling does not inspire confidence, i rarely go any faster that 80/90 on the motorway as i just dont feel like i have control of the car.

This week i have experienced some scarey monents. When braking slightly from 40 to 30 and turning right round on a roundabout at the same time, i got the feeling i was about to loose control or spin it.. it kinda wallowed very slighted stright on momentarily instead of continuing the turn. I thought that was probably braking related. I did some brake tests in a striaght line from about 40 and found that the driver's drive front wheel locks up and smokes if i brake hard. I have knocking noise from driver's side damper also.. thats why i had it checked out at HiQ.. they didnt find anythin wrong with the barkes btw.

Should i expect good improvement if i let you put standard shocks on it?

Top mounts are propper expesive arent they? i think i would sell it before replacing those.

The issues you have is exactly the problem that Paul had on his 2.7 & replacing all four corners with Boge/Sachs standard replacements & a DIY geo check transformed the car.

I think the set of 4 were around £400 from memory but that was 08.

If you need top mounts I'd go s/h but I think it'll be unlikely. Another option would be adjustable top mounts.

Better than stock. Loads cheaper.
