can i fit a 1987 (oval dash) engine in my 1984 ( square dash ) both 2.5

Yup, few minor differences but shouldn't affect the overall transplant. You will need the later DME & AFM as they are different & not sure if they transplant.

You might be able to use your exsisting wiring. When I swapped my engine, the engine I got came with wiring but looked completly different to what I had, so I used mine. All I had to do in some cases was to swap a couple of the sensors from my old engine as they had different connectors. Its not as bad as it looks (honest). Best of luck!

So long as your AFM & DME match it will work. I have an early engine in a late car with late AFM & DME. Sure the map isn't perfect. But with cars of this age there are far more factors that effect how the car runs (Like the state of the AFM.) . The cam profile on the early cars is slightly different to the late ones. But not enough to mess up the fueling. If your existing wiring loom is good I wouldn't mess with it. Either change the connectors or swap the sensors. Engine condition is the major factor.

Your doing this the opposite way around. But if you stick with your early AFM & ECU/DME to match your loom (Assuming they work ok.) Moving old wiring looms could cause problems as the insulation will be brittle with age & if your not very gentle it will soon be ruined. Lindsey racing sell engine wiring harnesses which come with new plugs. So if anything is too far gone you can replace just the bit thats had it. I fitted a new injector wiring loom as my old one was falling apart. Plugs straight into the ECU through the original plug. Just needed one soldered joint. The looms Lindsey racing sell are the same for early & late cars. So it follows that the plugs should be the same! My car came with the early engine fitted. But has late AFM & ECU/DME. Don't know if the late ECU/DME will plug into your early loom but it will take seconds to find out.

Actually, now I've time to think about it the only thing I had to change was the tempreture gauge sender (next to the coolant sensor). Other than that it was plain sailing.

Have you swaped the engine yet? i recently bought a decent late engine to go into my early car, just want to know how it went for you if you have tried it yet?

What mileage on the new engines?

well my original engine is just over 150k, and although it is in far better running condition now than when i got it, it still has noisy tappets sometimes which comes and goes for weeks at a time, and it just seemed a better idea to get a decent low mileage engine (or at least one that's been very well looked after) and do it up in the garage and plonk it in, i managed to get a later engine just under 70k mark (which runs very quietly and smooth) on ebay for 170quid which seemed too good to miss, although i admit i originally wanted an s2 engine for a bit more punch, despite driving like an old man.

Im just waiting for some good weather to begin tarting up the engine and do the swap, i did plan to take the car off road to do some of the more major work but thanks to my not so old 'modern and reliable' Citroen C5 turning itself off on the motorway for the fun of it and then being hit but a very drowsy lorry driver from romford, that plan didn't work out so well as the 944 is now my daily driver... not that it has ever let me down, or tried to kill me
