Hi - these are apparently very good, ideal for our climate where we get snow every so often. You can probably get them from Halfords.

Unfortunately they dont do a size for my Cup1's (255/400/17) but they seem to have a pretty good range.

Thats a pretty good idea. Bit like skins for skis. Easier to use than chains though I expect they will wear out the same if not taken off when you get to a clear road. Seeing the chaos on the news I don't understand why so many set off to work despite the forecast without any kind of preparation. I used to fit winter tyres when I worked out in the sticks & they worked. Took them off again at Easter. Never got stuck. The real problem are the drivers that can't drive in snow except at 4mph & stop when ever theres a hill. Then select first & rev the tits off it when it spins.

Hi,

Thanks a million for the post. :) Just managed to order a set of 255/40/17's. :D Hopefully I can get to work a bit easier without slip slidding the whole way. Panel beaters are expensive! Even the main roads are rubbish around here. Plus it also saves me having to beg to use wifey's car.

Where did you order the 255/40/17's? Autosock told me they didnt do that size.

Thanks

Hi,

Click on the following link. My tyre size didn't come up initially until I went on the UK website supplier. I used the sizing chart and they had them in. Result. :D

Hope this helps.

Hi Graham,

Didn't realise you were in Brussels. Try:

http://www.autosock.no/?aid=9049482&country=9057582

Although I think the Roof Box Company website will post outside the UK.

Regards,

Ben :bounce:

That was the website i looked at, the Autosock site does not show our size.

I hope it does fit as i'll be straight out buying them - the chart you are looking at does not look like the original autosock one - i also looked on the back of a pack in an auto shop here and again it was not shown, it might be worth double checking with them.

I cant see on the website how long these are supposed to last , I'm thinking emergency journey home ? , after all the forces on a car tyre are phenominal.

What an intriguing product though.

It only says they are re-usable/machine washable. I would guess that as soon as you get them near regular tarmac they will be history but very useful if you get caught out in snowfall that has yet to be cleared or stuck at the bottom of a hill.

Obviously the best thing to use is winter tyres, summer tyres do not work properly below -7 so us Brits have always been taking a risk during winter and all seasons wont cut it in snow. When i lived in the US it was a given to have a spare set of wheels with winter tyres on and that was only CT. All my colleagues in my office from throughout Europe think i'm nuts for not having them here in Brussels.

The fact is that winter tyres especially on our cars are far safer than summer or all season's in the winter when there is ice let alone 20-40cm's of snow and a lack of salt/snow plough's.

As soon as i have decided which wheels i'm sticking with i'll be investing in winter tyres for sure.

Looks like it would be worth having a set of these in the boot for emergencies.

Just wondering if they work on rear wheel drive or not? The pack is a pair not all four. In the pictures they are on the front tires. There an entry in the FAQ for 4 wheel drive but nothing for rear wheel.

I probably won’t drive my car until the snow is totally gone as I have summer tyres on. I tried for the supermarket the other day on a gritted/salted road with a small amount of fresh snow and it was horrible. I could feel the car squirming around even in a straight line and had absolutely no confidence breaking and in fact did skid for 2 or 3 meters. Basically I was holding up traffic with taxies , buses and old ladies overtaking me.

You only need them on your driving wheels. 90% of cars are FWD these days hence the pic. They give you traction but don't help much in stopping or cornering. But you can go slow without getting stuck. But as soon as you get to good road you have to take them off or they will only last 5 minutes just like chains. Not very practicle until they run out of grit! Maybe in a couple of days.........
