Hi guys,

Would any of you kind peole be able to offer me some advice re this matter. I have always been very lucky when it comes to cars and never seem to get any problems but today the 944 started to make a loud knocking noise from the rear passenger wheel. It doesnt seem to be affected by road bumps (so probably not shock related) merely the speed im doing. Ie it sounds like a machine gun on a motorway but a clock ticking at slow speeds. I havent noticed any change to the handling, just the embarrassment of folks gawping (for the wrong reasons!!)

Any advice greatfully received as i would like to correct the matter myself rather than taking it to a garage.

Regards

Neil.

Does you handbrake work on that side?
It may be that the retainers for the handbrake shoes have given up the ghost and the shoes are catching the inside of the drum.

To be honest the handbrake barely works. It fails on a steep incline. I will jack it up and see if there is any resistance on that side.

Cheers

Might also be worthwhile checking that the drive shaft bolts are tight at the gearbox end too.

You could always take it over to David at Car Tech and Care in Northallerton for a quick look. He will be there in the morning. His rates are very good and he gives discount to TIPEC members (another good reason to join  )
I'll be going to see him myself tomorrow.

On another note, I'm just down the road from you, but I've not seen your 944 out and about so far.

I can vouch for Car Tech and Care. David has done work on my car and some of the other NE member's cars too.
Sensible quotes and he sticks by them too.

Check the tyres first for nails or bulges

Check the following: drive shaft CV joints and cap head bolts, round aluminium shield fitted at rear of brake disc (if fitted), brake calliper security, wheel bearings (with hand brake off try to wobble the wheel top to bottom and front to rear), exhaust heat shield. Let us know what you find. Good luck...

Drive shaft bolts & then strip the driveshafts off & look at the CV joints themselves. I'd guess a knacked CV joint.

I can vouch for David at Car Tech and care he did some diagnosis work on my S2 and also changed my clutch and rear gear linkage all for the price and time quoted and as Simon says he give discount for TIPEC members so a good reason to join.

Justa quick update lads. Ive not got it sorted yet but it is now intermittent.

I have noticed that the tapping noise only happens when applying the gas (accelerating). Ie not when just cruising. Not sure if this means that it is more likely to be the cv joint or not.

CV joint or bolts, maybe CV joint one of mine made a racket only when very hot & in a certain position! Another I worked on made no noise but was VERY VERY knackered
