Sorry if you've already seen me post the same subject on PCGB, but I thought some learned opinions might also be available here. Here goes:

First run out on Sunday after numerous works to improve the car. I was meeting the PCGB R19 chaps for the run up to the Cornbury House Open Day, pulled up after an uneventful commute to the meeting place, and got out for a chat while everyone assembled.

On starting up, the engine was mis-firing, but to my horror, great clouds of black/blue smoke were pouring from the exhaust. The engine settled down to a normal idle after maybe 30 seconds, but the smoke persisted for a while. I set off anyway, and the car performed normally throughout the journey, during which it received no quarter with an Italian tune-up. Another S2 was following me on the journey and reported no smoke once the initial cloud cleared- nothing on change up either.

It repeated the smoke problem when I started up to leave Cornbury, but not to the same extent as earlier. I've parked her up, disgusted...

Any ideas chaps? I'm thinking sticky valve, broken valve spring, something like that.

Thanks, Craig

My cabby did something similar on the way over to Brugge, sick as a dog as soon as we got out of Calais.

Fired her up after pulling over and covered the front of Rich Simpsons Supersport in Black smoke. Gave her good thrashing, never had the problem again.

If it is black smoke, it is overfueling. Push the choke back in (only kidding!). Sticky air flow meter, coolan temp sensor faulty, give the temp sensor multiplugs a clean,

Sadly, the thrashing didn't work on mine...

Am about to fire her up again. Lets see what horrors exit the exhaust this time...

Hi,

Sounds like it could be a leaky injector. Does it take a while to start when turning over? This could possibly be a lack of pressure in the fuel rail indicting a leaky injector, which then burns off the excess fuel when you start up creating lots of smoke.

Thanks Andy. Seems that it might be something like that but it's all coming apart on Monday for further investigation. In the meantime I've chucked some injector cleaner in the tank in the hope that might help a bit. Off for a thrash later...
