Post subject:  Tyre hitting wheel arch
Hi all, I've had my 944 for about 8 months now and when I first got it I noticed if I opened it up and changed from 1st to 2nd it would squat so hard the tyre would hit the arch. Now I know this aint right but as I don't thrash it and have since improved my gear change technique it has'nt been a problem up until recently when I had the rust repaired on the drivers side rear arch, now every time I hit a bump or cornered quite hard it would hit :evil: So I took it back and he narrowed the inside of the arch for me and it still hits :twisted: The last straw was last night when I took two of the lads off my watch to the fire station in Manchester city centre for our christmas p#ss up. The journey was horrendous although funny as one of them is 6ft 2in and the other is 6ft 4in :lol:
I have'nt gone back for my car yet but will be shortly as I'm on tonight and am dreading it as when I left it appeared to be sitting lower on the drivers side.
As I am by no means a mechanic and am still learning I would love to hear your ideas. P.S I should point out it has 255 rear tyres on boxster wheels.

that'll most likely be the problem; bit fat for a 944, turbo has 245s iirc and rolled arches. my 2.5 n/a is on 225 rears on 8j rims.

standard for a 2.5 n/a was 7j rims all round on 215 or 195. but the rears sit under quite a bit with them.

mind you if its sitting unevenly then suspension isnt right either.

I have 255 tyres on 9j rears on my Rose (944 Turbo S).
The wheels are 17" CUP 2's (55 offset) from my 928 GTS and Rose cars had rolled rear arches.

Are your 'Boxster' wheels 17"?

What is the offset?
I dont think you 245 is a standard width for 17" tyres.
I think the next common size down is 225.

Ask at your local tyre store.
You willl need your rim widths to check if the tyre is within the recommended fittting range.

Off set of wheels will be marked on them as ETxx that is what Stephen is talking about.

Shocks will make no difference to the ride height, I suspect that either the torsion beam mountings are knackered or more likely the torsion bars need reindexing.

Fiddly as in no parts but labour. Also dependent on how much of it is seized up! It needs to go someone who has done it before. It'll need a full geometry check after as well.

I have 255/45/17 on cup1 alloys on my 944S2 and they don't come close to touching the arches even with people in the back seats so I would suspect more a problem with the torsion bar and rear suspension, also as mentioned check the wheel offset is suitable for your car.

Just a thought Brucey it hasn't got odd rear wheels or a spacer on one side has it?

May get away with just adjusting the eccentrics.
