Hi Guys I've got a tapping noise coming from what seems to be my rocker cover, I've had it since i have had the car from what i can remember. Friend says i should get the tappets looked at but i wanna know if it is something else before i go taking the rocker cover off. is it a normal noise to hear?? cheers ![]() |

depends how loud it is? is it always tere? I believe the car you have has hydraulic tappets, sometines have lazy followers. I have spent too much time at JMG |

It could be a lazy tappet. I'm told one of the tappet flushes/cleaners can work but have never tried them. The other possibility is the tappet feed is blocked which can only be found by pulling it out. |

Worth trying an engine flush, Forte is the one I would recommend. Leave the car idling for a good 30 minutes so it gets nice and hot. Also worth trying a slightly thicker oil, maybe a 15/50 such as Mobil 1. Alasdair |

I hope for your sake that it sounds nothing like this: In which case it will be new engine time. Failing that, did you leave the tappets in oil before you put the new head back on? As said, leaving it running/driving it will cure the tappets. |

Try running "Forte top end treatment" through it for a few hundred miles and if it is sticky tappets then hopefully that may clear it. Just pour a bottle in with you oil. If your oil is dirty then a change of oil first wouldn't hurt. |

Right well I've bought me some Forte top end treatment and also while i was browsing the shop got me some Forte Bio De-greaser for the cooling system... Thought it a good idea as my head gasket went earlier this year, so there might be some "oily deposits" floating around etc. Thanks for the advice guys hopefully its just a case of gunk blocking them up! Bloody hell Chas that is about 5 times noisier than mine ![]() |

A new engine, cam timing done, belts done and a clutch later (seemed silly to not do it with the engine out) and it's all sorted. Cylinder head's fine. Still deciding what to do with it (may practice some porting if I can get access to a flow bench (considering it's scrap as you know). |
