Hi all, I am starting to think that my gearbox may be on the way out on my recently purchased S2. Got the car on the ramp today and there seems to be no problems with either wheel bearings. Found the nearside drive shaft bolts to be loose at the inner CV and retightened them. I also noticed that there was a lot of up and down play in the output flnages from the gearbox so maybe the diff bearings are knackered. I also checked the other box I have and there is very little play on that so may be time to change it. Any suggestions???

Play in the output flanges would be knackered bearings. Is there any oil in the box or is it all over the boot floor, that would be a good indicator. If it has been run with the driveshaft bolts loose then that won't have done any of it any good. Also the bolts are in theory one time use only & if it has been driven with them loose then they will be "necked" or distorted & I'd look at changing them.

Hi Jim, went and took the box out. The bearings feel pretty done so will put the other gearbox in. It feels a lot smoother and tighter than the present one! Will get some new bolts ordered up tomorrow. The gearbox support is also pretty crusty so 20 minutes with my trusty grit blaster and it will be good as new after a coat of paint!

Worth having a nose at the condition of the grease in the driveshaft CVs as well, one of mine had what looked like congealed sawdust in it!
Probably not the best lubricating properties either :o SO I stripped & cleaned all 4 joints. Worth checking gearbox oil level whilst it is out as well as it is easier to get the bungs out while it is on the floor.

Gearbox level checking is always easy on a 2 post ramp! At least I won't have to change the wheel bearing now! One of the bellhousing bolts was also missing but have plenty spares.
