Hi all I am a complete newby, I joined the club at the classic motor show :D, I purchased my first Porsche, a 1981 924 on the way to the show for £600 and want to get it in tip top shape. I need a little help finding A) parts and B) a good local mechanic. With regards to parts the most important are a new heater control console unit as it is currently stuck in cold and has no leaver for the heat part (not good for winter) and secondly it is leaking on the passenger side through the battery compartment (annoying as I checked her when buying and the previous owner has already welded this and it looked really good) So what should I do? I am considering bathroom sealant as a temp fix tonight as the weather is so bad and I have a swimming pool. I live in Maidstone, Kent, so anyone know a good garage is the car really needs a good service. Looking forward to being part of the community :)

Warm welcome to the Club.
It is great to have another 924 owner as they are so rare these days.

Sorry I can't help with a garage either (I am from the Frozen North).
Bath room sealant sound as good as any for a Temp fix as once it dries it should peal off.

Live and breathe the Marque,
Stephen

I wouldn't worry too much about not having a heater as the 924 heater is notorious for being warm whether it's on or off!

Slugkiller pop along to the next SELNK meeting on Dec 4th details here:- http://tipec.net/region_southeastlondon.php

Does it have a sun roof? The leak could be blocked drains in the roof or possibly in the bottom of the door.

Hi all thanks for the advice, I have emailed Jon with a list and have decided to do the service myself :), just been to the porsche shop and ordered everything I need :), I drove the car from Birmingham to Kent and I can say with all confidence that it was not a warm experience.

Welcome dont be confused :? :? :? :? :? good luck with your new project i'm sure your be more than happy once you have pluged the hole, how much water is in the car? i had a simular issue and used my Vax cleaner and sucked all the water out, however you will need to get the heater working.
Not sure if these cars have a matrix thats maybe where the water is coming from...dont quote me on that,,,
Keep us posted!!! :bounce: :bounce:

The 924 like the 924S can leak water in through the heater fan inlet which comes through a large hole in the front bulkhead, it should be sealed but this tends to go hard and lets water in which can look as though it is coming through the battery tray. You need to lie down in the passenger footwell and look behind the dashboard, center console level and you can see where the heater fan units bolts to the bulkhead. The bolts can be tightened and this sometimes stops the water getting in or as in my case I had to remove the fan unit from under the bonnet and re-seal with black mastic then refit.

The problem is the water runs down the inside of the firewall and then under the front carpets to sit in the footwell, so it can appear to be coming in from the battery tray. I wasted a lot of time re-sealing the battery tray before I spotted this leak.

Hi David,

Thanks for that, it looks like I need to do a lot of crawling around in the car this weekend :D.

Also I am thinking of going along to the 4th December meet in Sevenoaks, Kent. Are there any other 924 owners going? Do I need to let anyone know?
