Post subject:  Alarm/battery/alternator issues
Got the car back today following a stint at Neil Garner garage in Kemble. http://www.neilgarner.co.uk/.

His rates are very good and his workmanship and knowledge is self evident.

Ive been waiting for the car to come back as i missed it :oops:

As soon as i get it back. Its sitting on the drive and the alarm is going off for no reason every two minutes. :evil:

Neil did mention that the alternator might not be working to its full, and might need looking at soon.

Battery is a weird never heard of brand....

Where do i start? Can anyone recommend a good CAT 1 alarm?

Generally there are only 2 or 3 battery manufacturers in the world so I wouldn't worry if it works. Otherwise shop around, mine has a Halfords HB010 on it which is great & was £60 with discount a couple of years ago.

Alarms either go Clifford or Toad, Jon Mitchell close to you is an approved Toad dealer & I'd let him do it.
But what do you have on at the mo? If it's as windy there as it is here then that may set it off. On mine I disable the ultrasonic sensors when it is parked up as otherwise rain sets it off. Also check interior light switches work that maybe the issue.

Might be wind Rav, the weather not the gassy stuff :lol: My alarm has gone off 4 times this morning, just put car back in the garage and all's quiet now. I've got one of Jon's Toad alarms fitted by himself and had no problems with it :)

Hi :)

It might be going off because of LOW voltage if your alternator is not working.....put a voltmeter across the battery and see what it reads...12 volts SHOULD be the reading with engine off, under that....say 11 volts or below and it may be setting it off...

might be going off if windy and the dash vents are open, wifey used to have a fiesta with this problem

IMO I would go for a Clifford alarm, or a Toad.

The alarm going off could be down to your battery, so I'd go and get that tested first. After that I would be looking at if you can change the proximity sensitivity on the existing alarm. Any idea what it is?

Just plumbed in a Bosch silver from Eurocarparts.

Bit worried as it is a 60Ah battery and the one i removed is a 71Ah.
Phoned my OPC and they said that 50AH should do although they don't really know. Apparently, it depends on what the car was specified in the factory. Air con would mean a different battery.....

Another quirk of Porsches. :P

Jon recommended putting a higher power one in then Porsche did especially for 'weekend cars' and the like. I think mine is a 90 odd Ah if I remember rightly. It's chucking it down out there at the moment so I'm staying indoors so can't confirm that at moment for ya.

I think mine is a 78a/h Bosch Silver.
60 might be a bit feeble on a cold morning?
Mind you could always take it back for a refund!!

Sorted - ive got a 096 battery rated at 78AH coming on Monday. Bosch Silver naturally...

Now i have to sort the water leaking into my car......

Good one Rav, should make those cold morning starts a bit easier and it puts your mind at rest the car will start when your miles from home. My mistake on mine, my battery is 78ah aswell, it's the diesel engine in the van thats higher :roll:

DavidL - Yes i will have to pay for the difference and they want a receipt for the old one.....

Andy - No probs mate, I dont even know where the battery is on my oil burner !

Update on Monday when the new battery is in.
