Lo all , bit confused here. I remember being told that if i got a 968 I could de cat it as it isnt compulsery for 80's cars. Well of course I ended up with another 944 Turbo and TBH I'm rather pleased I chose too. anyway I digress , does my 944 Turbo have a cat and if so why would I keep it. I'm only planning what I will and won't do at this stage but since all I see is 'cat back' systems being sold ( I.E rear boxes with a long pipe :P ) I am assuming the car does indeed have a cat but am totally confused as to what parts are actually worth replacing if you see what I mean.

I would add that I do try and find out :| even clarkes manual mentions cutting off primary muffler/Catalytic converter does that mean you may have one or the other , they dont clarify this.

Cheers

Mas

Hi Mas. 'No pussy on yours' is the short answer. The middle bits called a front muffler and theres the pipe back to the turbo running alongside. By all means get a straight through 3" exhaust, go on you know it makes sense  When JMG finally get mine fitted I'll report on what I find :bounce:

I think it was only the US cars that had cats in 87, so that's why they appear on sites like Clarkes

Cats were optional in Germany in the late 80's & compulsory soon after so quite possible that is could be C0 Market as well.

My LHD German 1983 944 had a cat and a big orange hexagonal sticker to match on tail.
My LHD German 1988 Silver Rose had a cat, heated seats and twin airbags (none of the UK ones did).
Euro spec is different from UK.
Yours won't have though so relax.

I am a CAT hater and recently had the ones on the 95 GTS snipped. It runs way better without them.
I am convinced it will take 1/2 second off my standing quarter time.
Have to try it out on the strip.

Shortly after buying my turbo I took it to a well known indy for some minor work, at the time I didn't know if it had a cat or a intermediate silencer, while they had it on their lift I asked if it was worth fitting a cat bypass pipe, they were quite keen to sell me one, shortly afterwards I found out my car didn't have a cat, I've never been back. :x

Pauly

People like that should be avoided like the plague.
You should add them in the praise or grumble section.

My 1990 Turbo had a cat, I understand they were standard in the UK by 1990 but you could still opt to have it supplied with a silencer instead of a cat because they weren't compulsory until August 1992 - K reg. I replaced it with an ESS decat last month and this still has a silencer in place of the cat. The cat had ribs on the sides and a more oval look, the decat is a simple cylinder with square edges where it joins the actual exhaust pipe.

Andy why are you still waiting for your exhaust? Get a Dansk and a decat and you won't be disappointed with the sound and performance (and they are in stock at lots of places too)

When I was talking to MarkK with some specialists they were saying that you are best off leaving the centre box in place a little more low end torque but also to get onto tracks which some tracks like Cadwell being very stringent on the noise tests.

This was over a year ago, at the time I wasn't very impressed but on reflection I learned enough to avoid them in the future.

The exhaust is ready it's the turbo downpipe I'm changing to 3" aswell to make full use of the exhaust system. I've the mentality if I'm doing something and 'while it's in there' I'll go the whole length and change everything needed. I'd be changing the manifold aswell but Jon said it's not required :? But yes if it was just the silencer and decat it would be on by now. Back down on Saturday so I'll give Jon another prod
