Hi all, been keeping an eye on a few S2s and the price still seems to vary greatly from car to car. This one has high miles but had a documented engine rebuild and also some paint. Looked quite tidy and only reached under 2.5K. Pity it at the other end of the country to me! Why some so cheap and others want crazy money???

I have been monitoring the prices too.
Cornwall is a cheap place for Porsches but a looong drive from Tyne-Tees.

I found Scotland cheap. As a rule of thumb, i find the further North you go the cheaper the car will be.
Both my 944 turbos came to me via the North.

That looks a pretty ordinanry S2 to me. Shure its had a head overhaul but thats about it. You could spend £xxxx's on it. Is the bottem end good? Does it burn oil? What does it do at the wheels. 125 or 185. Does it need new bottem arms etc. I'd want to drive it before bidding over 2.5K. Having seen what up to 3K gets you today in modern metal. I think the best cars are very undervalued at the moment. Despite the running costs. I travelled from Yorkshire to Cambridge to get my 8v with a speicalist service history from a porshce club member. Still cost a bomb to sort out! But it was a cheap one at the time.

The weather plays a big factor up here for buying cars, the majority of cars I have seen have had sills done (99% done badly as well!), most seem to have poor jacking points, crumbly inners, etc. Fine if the price is right but most are still too dear with the amount of work needing done. I would travel anywhere in the UK for the right car but most owners don't seem too interested in taking pics of the underside of the car to send you. Their loss I suppose! Still looking for a tidy S2 if anyone knows of one up for grabs, glacier blue preferably to match my old SC! Sad I know but I like the colour.....

Bought my first Porsche (a Rose) 15 miles away.
I travelled to Munster (in Germany) to get my 944.
I travelled to Koln (Colonge) to buy my 968
I travelled to Stuttgart to buy my 928.
I travelled 190 miles to get my Rose.

I live in Devon, and I bought my lux in Birmingham. I'd consider anything above 150miles far away. But here it is generally an hours drive to the next town, so three hours doesn't seem that far....

Southwest can be a good place to buy a car as there is a lot less salt used on the roads here. However, generally cars cost more here in Plymouth than compared to say, Torquay, where cars (in general, not specifically porsches) can cost 25% less.

Ebay is a good indicator of what a car is really worth, as in what someone is prepared to pay for it. What the owner is asking for it is a completely different matter. I always think a car is worth what you paid for it, not what the owner is asking! There's an option on ebay to only list completed auctions - always interesting to see what actually sold for what....

I traveled 500 miles south to pick up my turbo. It is a common belief in Scotland that the best cars come from the south of England. It's no coincidence that it gets less wet the further south you go!

IMHO Distance shouldn't be an object if you're serious about a car.

Distance shouldn't be an issue but I flew to Northern Ireland once to see an Alpina with ferries and the like booked to get me home only to find that the vendor couldn't even find the V5 despite assuring me all the paperwork etc was in order.
It's not all bad as not buying that mean't I bought my 944S instead!
I wouldn't do the flying bit again unless I really couldn't find one closer to home.

My first (944) was from Bucks to Wales (about 120 miles away)
Second (944) was Bucks to Luton (only about 25 miles away I think)
Most recent (928) I got delivered so to my door :-)
