Hi, Is this a worthwhile upgrade for an S2? there seems to be a lot of differing opinions and not much supporting evidence of power gains/benefits. I'm already running a catless SS 3" exhaust and some kind of performance chip, i'm planning on getting it remapped properly and thought a MAF might be a good addition at this time? I see Deutche Nine has a 'stealth' kit using the OE airbox, its fairly expensive but not out of the question if they give proven benefits. Thanks Graham |

My personal feeling is that I wouldn't bother FOR a standard car. Once it starts to breathe a lot better maybe. On N/A cars the AFM is not that big an obstruction anyway. The only time I might consider it is if the AFM is dead as they are £200 upwards depending on model so at that point could be worth it. To add don't forget hotwire MAFs are very unforgining of oil & other contaminants so a K & N could be the kiss of death to it! |

I asked the question to Rick Woods. Complete waste of time was the answer. He spends his life around race cars as thats 90% of his business. He has 3 dyno cells!! As well as a machine shop stuffed with the latest CNC kit. Gets quite a lot of pork in. If your want more power a proper exhaust manifold & system & then a tuned head would do the job. With modern tec' even the S2 can be tuned. Car would need a remap afterwards as it would probably exceed the tolerance in the ECU & would cost lots. 50 horse Nitrous kit would be cheaper! Until you told the insurance. ![]() |

Talking to JMG when planning the upgrades on my turbo he said the MAf upgrade is not that nescessary even with the 320bhp we're looking for. Chip set and remap and good induction/exhaust system will transform the car to start with. Andy |

The MAF manipulates the signal for which the chipset manipulates the ECU. Kind of work hand in hand. By induction are you referring to the intake? There is not much to improve there, even with the lower performance of the #4 runner. And what is available is overpriced for the performance it yields. If you are referring to the turbo for increased inductive flow then yes....intake no. 3" exhaust YES...and new wastegate & boost controller (manual or electronic) will make a huge difference in tandem with the above ![]() PATRICK |

IMO I'd ensure that your ignition system is in order (is the car still on 5 year + HT leads (pricey for an S2), Dizzy Cap and rotor arm?) Whilst this may not transform the car, it will minimise losses, as will ensuring the car's fully serviced. Also, get your cam timing checked via a dial gauge. I did on the second engine, and compared to other S2s and 'good' 2.5s it really flies and comes into its own over 4k. I'm surprised at the difference myself (JMG and EMC Motorsport reckon it can cost up to 15BHP on an S2). It felt before like a significant difference in power between my very healthy Pug 306 GTi-6 and mate's Mondeo ST24. Now it fees like they don't stand a chance. Whilst we are discussing S2 tuning, is it worth changing the mid section for a straight pipe, staying stock or going for a more freer flowing item like ProMax's centre box or the ESS centre box. Being an early S2 mine has no cat. I have been considering ProMax's chip for a while but I'm going to wait until I service the whole lot (currently only the fuel filter is left to do, as well as the plugs (getting on for near 12k miles now). and then change the HT leads (it is already on a new cap and rotor arm). |

Here are some decently accurate numbers: *In both cases the car includes full 3" SS CATLESS Exhaust, kkk-BW-27/6 Turbo, 83lb injectors, Vitesse EBC, LC-1 Wideband, SFR IC pipes, SMT-6, Fabspeed DP, TiAL 38mm WG* With Vitesse MAF and chipboard: 263 RWHP @ 12psi (289 bhp) 318 RWHP @ 17psi (353 bhp) Stock AFM and chip: 231 RWHP @ 12 psi (256 bhp) 276 RWHP @ 17 psi (306 bhp) Hope this helps ![]() |
