Post subject:  Paint protector problemo!
Hi all, first of all I'd like to apologise because I have noticed that since I bought the Porsche and introduced myself on the forum all I have done is ask loads of questions, but here we go again. I got my 944 (alpine white) back from the bodyshop yesterday and he had indeed removed the rust from the wheel arch, sill and rear drivers side window and I am well chuffed with the results. He also assures me that he has replaced with new metal and as I know him I don't doubt it, however he tells me that when he removed the paint protectors on that side of the car he reckons that they have previously been sprayed around. So the upshot is that he has left them on the other side and I'd already asked him if he could remove them as well while he was doing the car.
So the joy was tinged with sadness as the previous crap side looks fantastic and the previous good side now looks shite (dirty looking paint protectors)!
I thought I would order some from Porsheapart and put them over the top but they tell me you can no longer get coloured ones and they only do clear!
I have a few ideas and would really value your opinions or your ideas.
1. Just carefully spray the existing ones.
2. Buy the clear protectors but carefully spray the existing ones before putting them over the top.
3. Try and get some sign writer company to cut me some white ones.

The clear paint protectors discolour over time,
I personally hate them and have left them off my car.

I have seen them painted over or masked around.
The results - its really up to the opinion of the individual.
If you really want them search e-bay and you will find copies.

Hi J.J, I suppose I only need a set of nearside alpine white ones as I could put clear ones on the side where he has removed them.

Alpine white are NLA, go to a signwriters/printers with a template and they will knock you some up, a good mate has done this with his.
Regards clear protectors OEM form Porsche made by 3M are the only ones to fit, trust me. :wink:

Thanks everyone. I'll have to take a closer look now as mas's post today on safe decal removal has now got me thinking if he just didn't want to remove them because it took him too long to do the other side, either way I'll sort it. And the Black Pro's look very good on an Alpine car....there is one around here with the BP's and black BBS wheels. Absolutely stunning.

Brucey...........................T Cut No :evil: horrible stuff, get some 3M Perfect It or Farcela G10 as used by bodyshops, Poorboys also do cutting compounds check out the car detailing sites, Cargeek ,Polished Bliss etc

Hi frenchy, I spent £35 quid the other day on the 3 stage meguiars stuff and took the advice of doing one panel at a time T-cutting it first So I washed the car and decided to do the bonnet, hey presto it p#ssed it down but like a gland I decided to do it anyway so I honestly don't think the T-cut got to do it's worst, am I mistaken or does stage 1 of the meguiars act as a cutting compound anyway?

It does the same job but not as agressively,stick with stuff like Meguiars

Hi all, so tonight I am gonna have another go at tackling the flat looking paint on the 44, but before I do has anyone any advice on the best way to go about it? I have got the 3 bottles of meguiars and also a detailing cloth. After washing the car do I dry off before applying stage one? After that do I wash off again as I'm guessing that stage one is a cutting compound. Then do I apply stage two and three one after the other? Also do I only use the detailing cloth for the final stage? Finally is T-cut really a big no no as I don't think the car has ever had anything but washes in the past and the paintwork looks like it could do with it.

Throw the T cut in the bin. You can wash the car with a cleaner & degreaser before you start with the Meguiars. But the Meguires will do the business. Give it a go. Alternativly you can use the T cut & throw the Meguiares in the bin & book the car in for a respray as all the paint you T cut will be wrecked & go white with bloom in a matter of weeks. :blackeye:
