Evening all,

I've discovered a bit of an oil leak this evening. I always put a sheet of cardboard under the car each night just to monitor any leaks etc. Anyway, I noticed a blob of oil on the cardboard. I immediately feared power steering but on this occassion it is engine oil.

I've looked about best I can with a torch and from what I can see its dripping down onto the power steering hoses. Then its dripping off onto the tray and running out the drain hole. I've checked the dipstick and the oil level is fine.

What is above the power steering pump that could be dripping down? I've also looked from the top down but can't see anything for the belts. Any idea's would be greatly appreciated. Its absolutley lashing it down with rain and I have no garage :( .

All the best,

Ben :bounce:

Oil filter housing & cooler(lux) pipes (S2 or Turbo) or balance shaft housing or cambox are the bits above.

Its not raining here Ben!! "What is above the power steering pump"? Well I dont know as I dont have power steering but it sounds like the rocker cover gasket.I m not sure if the fuel injection rail has to come off to get the rocker cover off,but if its only one spot of oil I wouldnt worry too much yet. :)

Hi,

Sorry. It's a'89 S2 if that makes a difference. Jim, its more central if that helps. I'll try to describe it best I can. It dripping onto the power steering high pressure hose centrally and dripping from the P/S hose onto the rubber bushing of the steering stabaliser. I've looked at the diagrams on PET to sort of get a vague idea of what the oil is leaking onto. The oil leak is minute but I can't help think it will not do my new power steering hose I've recently had fitted any good. I'd rather get the problem sorted sooner rather than later.

If it is the parts you described Jim, are we talking a couple of oil seals or is it ££££££££.

I've had a slight leak on the oil filter side before. When the car was serviced, the oil leak went away.

Ben,
Chances are it is your balance shaft seal. It is typically the first to go in that area.

When you just start the engine from cold have a powerfull torch handy & look for the leak from the top! You can see things that don't show up with the naked eye. There are many possibilities but if it's coming down from the top you see it better with the engine cold. Oil hitting a hot manifold usually turns to vapour. Tough luck Ben :(
