Hello,

I'll be replacing my dash bulbs next week and wandered if there is anything i can do with the digital clock - it works fine but is very dim, is it a bulb replacement or a whole unit?

Thanks

Graham

Does it change when you put your lights on? Mine does illuminate with the dash lights but it's quite subtle. Don't know if you can replace the bulb, sorry.

Yes, you can replace the bulb. It’s a different size etc to the rest of the dash ones, you may need to pop it out for reference before hunting down your replacement.

Take a look at this post before you take the clock out. It contains a guide on how to do it.

The lamp itself is a quarter-turn plastic-base type similar, but smaller, to instrument cluster lights and is easy to change once you get the clock out.

As stated before, an easy job to change the bulb and worth doing while doing the rest, just be careful removing the sections of the dash as they can get brittle and watch out for the bulbs inside switches when you remove them as they easily get broken and are then hard to get out (don't as how I know) I got my clock replacement bulb from Halfords only a couple of pounds and you will probably be there for the others. Watch out you dont push on the LED display of the clock when changing the bulb as they are quite fragile.

Great - thanks for the input. is there a way to alter the colour from amber to green?

I'm changing the other dash lights to green (ala golf gti)

Not sure but I think the amber colour is a feature of the LED not the backlight, but I suppose you could try a green bulb in place of a white one and see what happens. Personally if the clock works I would just change the bulb and leave well alone as the clock can be temperamental and is very expensive to replace. Not sure how well the reflected light on the instrument cluster will work with green lamps, it is usually dim even after replacing the reflectors and putting new bulbs (pobably look better with white instrument surrounds rather than the normal black), however I have seen a 968 with blue illumination and that looks good and works well, so for the cost of a few LEDs give it a go and see what happens.

The bulbs were 10quid for 10 so figured i would give it a go, i dont like the amber/white and blue, red etc reminds me of modern cars. Thats when i remembered my beloved GTI had green!... i'll let you know how it goes.

I used an LED bulb (similar to link) and fabricated it to fit into the existing bulb apperture with insulation tape. I used a blue one, and the clock illuminates in blue...
