Lo all, as I'm currently looking for an S2 or 968 to replace my 944 Turbo , I have been reading about 'decat' pipes togehter with a nice exhaust system, just thoughts as to what I might do first.

Can anyone tell me in what year did they first fit Cats to a 944 , do all S2's have a cat ?
Also won't fitting a decat pipe effect the emmisions and cause you to potentially fail the MOT. There is no doubt that a cat restricts performance and can even effect economy so I personally do fancy the decat route if its practical.

Advice on this would be appreciated.

Regards Mas

AFAIK, the very early S2s did not come with a cat (mine didn't either). After a while they started to fit them. You can put a normal pipe/box in place and still pass the emissions as they only really became more stringent for cars built after 1992 (hence why you hear of hot hatch/modern car owners finding friendly MOT stations). On an S2 you'll have no problems with getting it decatted.

On a 968 though, you may since they were built after 1992 and hence by law require a cat. A sports cat may be an alternative option here.

Cats were fitted from 89 but not to all Porsche (but the German market demanded them)
In UK if car is registered before Aug 93 then it doesn't need a Cat or get a Cat MOT & you can remove it.

I replaced my first Silver Rose with a 968 and was never happy.
10 bhp less but felt like a loss of 50. After the Turbo I could not get used to getting my a**e kicked all the time.
Hence the 928GTS and now another Silver Rose...

Why you want to dump the turbo mas. Thought you'd just got it running right! :? Highest risk is when you change. You could buy a real nightmare! Trouble with the S2 is they just didn't make that many so there are not so many good ones out there to buy. At current values the best ones are being held onto.

The lack of power a couple of garages have put down the lack of power on 3.0s to cam timing, which JMG reckon can rob as much as 20BHP. EMC reckon that if this is not checked out, it can potentially feel as if the car has its throttle cable loose/not pulled all the way up. This affects the 944 and the 968.

I wouldn't agree with there being a lack of good S2s available. I came across more sheddy 2.5s than I did S2s.

J.J , I feel I should explain as thats a very valid ,point re changing cars.

I didnt want to commit much money to the classic Porsche idea as I didnt know how I'd get on with ' the scene' full stop. I bought that car for 1700 quid warts and all and it always ran well from the moment I got it apart from the heater thing which you guys helped me with.

I knew it had problems though thats why it was a cheepo ! , I always said here if its a heap ill scrap it not lie and rob someone else but TBH it was too good for scrap. In my mind I had a months extended Porsche test for 150 quid including learnign many 944 faults and pitfalls at the same time ! you couldnt hire a car for that especially a porsche heeheh.

HOWEVER , to get the car right for an MOT and long term keeping it needed.

1) Front N/S side shock
2) Anti roll bar bushes all round
3) Some sort of wishbone bush whatever
4) Front calipers rebuilding ( apparently) but braked damn well.
5) Handbrake rebuilding
6) Sunroof raising arms and cables replacing / all broken
7) possible according to the buyer a wheel bearing done (and I believe him).
8) Odometer fixing ( didnt work)
9) Belt service since it hasnt never been done ( oil seals to be done same time).

Despite running really well and the clutch being great , it was 'a good' £2,000 to make it decent and thats being conservative.

I put it on e-bay as a 1500 quid project car for someone to make a track car or whatever , was honest about its state and still had people fighting over it and sold it in a day so I could move on and try another type of Porsche. It wasnt a dog it ran lovely but it had had no money spen ton it for 8 years basically thats why the bloke outed it.

The difference is now I am really pleased weith 'the hobby' and am quite happy to buy a newer turbo , S2 , 968 whatever and spend the cash.

Sorry re the long explanation but I thought it might be interesting

ok so now I understand! Your starting the long haul to find a cared for car. I wouldn't worry about age. Only condition. You need a car thats been looked after by a total nut whos spent loads on it. Have fun looking & all the best. Plenty of time before next spring. :)
