Well some of you may have read my saga with my rad cooling fan where because it was not fixed at the bottom, it blew in and slowly got sliced by the crankshaft pulley. Well now I think because of the stress in the overheating from that I've developed another more serious problem - which led to me being transported home by the AA.

Massive overheat
it appears that water is not circulating at all at least not to the top of engine bleed valve
A few days ago the engine temperature suddenly rocketed after a few miles then just as suddenly went back to normal no obvious water loss.
Then on my way home a few days later
Steady overheating, stopped and there was signs of water dripping out the bottom somewhere. Again on topping up when it had cooled down no obvious water flowing. So I had to call the AA get you home men. At least he did have a water sensor thing that says if its the head gasket or not - its not the head gasket!
Its either been too dark or I've been away but I'm going to give it a good sorting this weekend.

My suspicion is that the thermostat has jammed shut brought on by my overheating problems a few weeks back with the rad fan problem.
But I don't know where the water leak is from -it seems to be near the water pump but probably not a hose , can't tell till I look properly. Its now quite a lot of water whenit warms up

anyone any suggestions - I've bought a new thermostat hoping its just that - would the water pump be damaged by a jammed thermostat particualry where its sealed to to the engine?

Sounds like stat to me! Be careful as this stress will nail the head gasket eventually. The stat is a swine to replace as it is held in by a steel circlip, which corrodes in & it isn't the easiest to reach.

Overheating does sound like the thermostat but the leak could well be the pump, when mine went I was never 100% sure it was that til the new one went in.

Well with the pump offit is easier to change the stat with the pump off. Shame it is such a job to get the pump off.

This was the start of my problem. (Under previous owner.) When a '44 overheats properly. It can warp the head. The top face warps first causing the cambox gasket to blow out. Only solution is to skim both faces. it also kills the seals on the oil water heat exchanger. Thats an expensive part. An exchange engine may be a cheaper solution unless it's in very good condition. You can nearly get an engine for the price of the oil cooler! It may not be that bad but be warned as once you start spending on it theres no end :lol:
