Hello again everybody. Got my first 944 a few days ago... wonder if you could help me out again.

The other day, while going down the M3 (full of 50 average speed sections, aaargh), I noticed that the speedo had suddenly stopped working. The needle stays at zero, and the numbers on the odometer stopped turning. Previously, the needle had been holding steady, indicating the right speed and not jumping around.

It's an 84 Lux, so I believe it has a speedo cable from the front right hub (as opposed to a hall effect electrical sensor on the transmission on later cars) - is that right?

Don't know if it might be related, but a bit before the speedo stopped I'd noticed what I thought was a new noise - a squeaky screechy noise coming from the front right which started above about 50mph. I haven't heard that noise since.

What's the most likely explanation? Snapped speedo cable? Bust speedo? Something else?

Is it a big job to replace a speedo cable? Any idea how many hours labour?

Thanks again

You can do it yourself. Id remove the binnacle and manually test the speedometer head. If it functions correctly when you turn the drive, then Id look at the cable.

Thanks, 944Man! Good news - sounds like a simple ish job.

I'm not very handy but would have a go, though I have embarrassingly limited tools with me at the moment. Don't think I could even get the steering wheel off! The 944 looks like quite a nice car to work on.

The car's booked in next week to have the tension on the cam belt checked / retensioned (was changed about 1,000 miles ago), so I'll ask them to fix the speedo then. I've ordered a new cable just in case that is what's gone (£15).
