I need a new rear box for my MOT from doing some pre-MOT checks on the car and can't seem to find a rear box in mild steel, only stainless steel ones and I don't want stainless steel, can anyone tell me a supplier who supplies a mild steel rear box for an '85/2 944 2.5 8v car. Thankyou, Nicola |

The original 944 rear box was made from Stainless steel except the rear tailpipe, hence why the tailpipe falls off a number of them. This is probably one of the reasons for why you can't find a stainless one (although I probably will be proved wrong). Is there any reason for why you want a Mild box over a stainless one? It may be worth your while looking out for a Dansk Stainless back box from Berlyn Autoparts ( http://www.partsforporsche.co.uk ) and others from around £190 (Type 911). |

Euro Car Parts do a Timax one which IME are generally made from Mild steel at £193. |

If Porsche rear boxes are stainless mine was very rusty! The Dansk is ok & sensible money. Sounds good on full chat. Quiet at tickover or off throttle. I would recommend doing the full system as the middle box is only £65 & it's an easier job. Front pipes need to be cut to length but not too bad. This is why factory systems on most cars (normally made from 409 Grade Stainless) last for almost a decade, and cheap pattern exhausts barely make the second year on a daily car. Also, the welds should be TIG on something like T304 grade steel where they are normally MIG due to cost, meaning the welds can go. Hell, the Janspeed system on a previous car was getting some surface rust (not alot) after 2-3 years, and the exhaust on my MGB was perforating slightly (stainless according to the receipts) after 19 years. |

JMG exhausts are T304 steel, Mandrel bent and TIG welded, what's going on mine but they are pricey. Same construction as the Fabspeed http://www.fabspeed.com/944Turbo.html which actually JMG sell parts like the turbo downpipe to Fabspeed! |

Thanks all! I was going on the fact the one on my car didn't look like stainless steel! And I wanted a replacement for it as the standard '44s sound nice, sometimes these stainless systems can sound a bit tinny to me (yes I'm rather shallow like that). Was going to do the centre section as well. Will have a look through all the recommendations, as I haven't done the job as of yet is there anything out there on the market which is not quite as quiet as standard but not a "chavvy" type of sound would want it to look standard. Thankyou everyone, Nicola The JMG one then sounds nice but not sure if they are doing a centre section for your model, you can always ask and I'm sure they can fabricate one or have a spare used one available. Hello, I'm new here today and have already introduced myself in the other section. I've been looking through the 944 section as I need a new exhaust for my Turbo. The Dansk option looks a very reasonable price compared to over a thousand from Porsche. What did you go for in the end Pixie? Andy, how is your JMG one, it seems a lot of money but then the other aftermarket ones do as well Promax, ESS and Fabspeed on the other exhaust thread |

It's a 3" pipe and very well made, you won't be getting any holes appearing or bit's falling off in a couple of years with his exhaust. If you see a Porsche exhaust and then one of these you'll see the extra effort required in the manufacturing process and hence the cost. There's 3 of us on here waiting for installation but Jon's not happy with the turbo down pipe examples the manufacturer is coming up with (1 was completely the wrong size pipe! but that another long story) Earlier ones I've seen, or heard rather, do sound fabulous without breaking all your neighbours windows when you start up  Have a look at the Fabspeed link further up this post, Jon's is very very similar but tailored for the UK cars so the tail pipe won't stick out like the US pipes do  Andy |
