Firstly I have searched the forums and cannot find any reference to my question so please bear with me.

I have been looking for something to use as a track toy and a 944 was suggested. Basically I am looking for something that I can live with every day but hoon around a track and get great enjoyment out of. I have a very limited budget to start with so am looking for something that I can upgrade incrementally as I need to or funds allow. Please see http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=18&t=749231&mid=45284&nmt=What%20to%20start%20a%20budget%20track%20day%20toy%20project%20with?. Now mostly they fall outside my budget but I found this close to me. I have asked for opinion on Pistonheads http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=48&t=749461&mid=45284&nmt=Is%20this%20likely%20to%20be%20a%20pup?%20%20 but thought that I would seek more advice on here. The advice I have is either to run away very fast or just go for it as it is so cheap!

My question is this does anyone have any experience of EJW Sports or know this car (ANZ 6062)? My thoughts are that it is either too good to be true or an abandoned project that is very good value.

Any advice gratefully received before I get to see it in the flesh.

Jon

What sort of budget do you have, Jon?

I'm not an expert - I'm actually on here to get advice too - but I have run several cars on track and it's a pretty demanding environment. I'd suggest getting a mechanically good example. I think I saw a post of yours on Pistonheads and I'd echo what was said there - if you're really tight on budget a 924 or something completely different may be easier. There is a tremendous scope for old cars to go downhill if they haven't been looked after. You might be lucky, but if you're on a very limited budget you might end up with something that costs more in the long run. I only mention this because I testdrove two similar-ish spec 944s over the weekend and the difference between the two was night and day - I wouldn't have wanted to take one of those on the track and it was up for quite a lot of money by current standards.

Only had a brief look but if your budget is £500 for purchase then it's totally unrealistic. Rusty '44s are good death traps. You also need a fit engine.

I bought a superb car for £475. Initially for a charity rally but it was too good to part with, so I kept it.

You certainly could buy a basket case for far more than £500, but that doesnt preclude the possibility of your buying a good car for less. I will concede that the more that you know, the better your chances, so look a lot and dont rush. The S2 engined 1986 car mentioned elsewhere wouldnt be a bad place to start either, as the parts are worth more than the asking price...

What kind of '44 was it for £475 Simon as in spec?

Simon speaks the truth about buying rot boxes for more than £500. I saw one below £1800 but thoroughly reseached my options (although my car is not perfect I admit). If possible, look at a very pricey car and then at a very cheap one to give yourself an idea of what to go for.

C-registered late spec 1985. Quiet transaxle and torque tube and excellent oil pressure: virtually zero oil use. Recent belts, steering rack and fuel tank. Known car from a specialist, but it needed an MOT. Less than desirable brown dash with grey-beige carpets and logo trim. The trim wasnt bad at all and the dash only has a couple of small fissures. The ATS wheels were badly oxidised and the paint needed a damned good polish up.

No sunroof unusually for a late series one, but I saw that as a plus point, as opposed to a negative one.

Well the case is closed! I tried to call the seller and was given a very firm FO tablet for even daring to ring to ask questions such as "who did the work" etc. The response was "I don't want to be answering questions for £890 so either buy it or go away". This is certainly not the approach I expected from someone who wants to sell a car, even at this end of the market. Many thanks for everyone’s input and assistance but I will have to continue looking.

Oh an on a side note not a good experience with this dealer, very rude and uncooperative so not recommended from me.

Many thanks again,

Jon

I've had that kind of deal on an MGB before (for similar money), and similar to yours it was one of the best ones I've owned. Never saw a welder underneath apart for new sills, Overdrive worked spot on, and the engine held superb oil pressure. Oh, it had 52,000 miles with MOTs going way back :). With it being one of the last chrome bumpers it was a deal.

Maybe luck can strike twice...

You can get my next car for me! Whenever I want anything there all knackerd & rotten. Unless I'm selling it then nobody wants one. :(
£500 won't even get you an engine at the dismantlers.
