Post subject:  first 944 year of production conundrum!?!

Hi All

Maybe some of you can come up with the right info I'm looking for. I was lead to believe, from all the research I've done on the internet, that the first production year of the 944 was 1982, yet I know of 2 944's that are X reg. I know for a fact that mine was registered in Aug 1982 and is a Y reg.

It's so weird as all the info I've found on the 'net says that the first production year is 1982, yet X reg's are 1981?!?!?! I have not come across ANY info that suggests that 944 production started in '81....?

PLEASE HELP!!! :?

Much obliged

Baz

X reg was from aug '81 to end of july '82, so if an X reg could be from jan '82 to end of july '82

If yours had been registered in July then it would be X registered.

Registrations changed in August of each year

According to Peter Morgan's writings, UK cars were launched in April 1982 so there's likely to be quite a lot of X reg. cars around.

Also, Porsche used to close the factory down sometime in August and when they reopened they started manufacturing cars for the following year. What this means is that all 1982 models were started to be produced from August 1981, so you can have a 1982 model first registered in September 1981 for example.

I have a 1990 model S2 but it was first registered in December 1989

If it was built and then sat in a dealer before being registered you could have a earlier car than the reg suggests. Mine is mid August 85, so should be an 86 model year, but is a 85 model year.

was it registered in aug '85 or built in aug '85, if it was registered in aug then it wiil be an '85 model, if built in aug '85 should be '86

Registered in Aug 85, would have been in weeks/months before.

If it was built in August then its a 1985 model year car. As Paul has already stated the factory shut down for the Summer holiday and then started to manufacture the following model years cars from September.

I read 928s were changed in August. Certainly there are August 85 registered 86 models about. Not sure if applies to all Porsche range though.

times were hard back then and cars sat around in compounds until the right model/colour/spec was ordered, some '83 models may not have been registered until '85

They'll be registering 2009 Panameras in 2012 probably as well ;-)
It can be irritating though ... my Audi is an '06 or so I thought until I took delivery and found it to be a '05 model year meaning more basic climate control system. Wasn't impressed!
