Post subject:  Diagnose.... Clutch pedal sticking to the floor
Would this be the slave cylinder, maybe a leak? the clutch seems to work fine except for this. The rubber stopper for the pedal is missing currently, could this be contributing?

Any tips to to diagnose and fix myself would be greatly appreciated - lots of silly things have been going wrong, garage bills mounting (wifes eyebrow is raised already). I keep telling myself the car has not been driven regularly for a long time so i just need to get through the first year.....

Checking around both the master and slave for signs of moisture (as well as the pipe, so inspect the whole system really).

In addition, also get that rubber part for the assembly and see if it is easy to pull the pedal back. If not, see why this is the case (How long is a piece of string? In the past I've had it being a semi seized pedal box (I had to hammer the pedal back to its natural place it was that badly seized), faulty springs (removed as part of a factory recall I later found out)).

Normally one of the cylinders, the master can be checked by running your hand up by the clutch pedal & checking for damp. The slave is more difficult as if it drips it stays in the bellhousing. Both are around 60quid each. The pipe is another possibility. What colour is the clutch fluid? If it is like minestrone soup then it may very well point to one of the cylinders.

I'm feeling your pain Graham. I've got through the 1st year and I'm still taking the hits! Wifes gone berserk with me over recent costs!

Had a quick look, fluid appears normal (light pee colour) and level is fine. I ran my hand around the clutch pedal area and no sign of dampness, i also had a grope around the slave but felt nothing amiss.

What should my diagnosis procedure be? what would you rank as the most likely culprits and what is the indication from each part of a problem?

I wish i wasnt the only Tipec international member!...

Your call personally I'd go for the slave first & then the master. If paying someone to do it you may be better off just getting the pair done & bled out as it'll save 1/2 or so of labour. Do you do your own spannering?

I'd love to do my own spannering but it scares the crap out of me.

I did service my old 911 (even adjusted the valves).... took me a week and i took it to the mechanic afterwards just to check i had screwed everything back together correctly!

What i need to do is go on a course but finding one in english here will be a problem.

Right in middle of the car just above & to the left of starter motor.

I forgot that i can't even get the jack under the car i decided that she has got to go to the mechanic..... last time, i will do it myself next time!

I'm going to invest in some decent ramps, theres a company called Eezup ramps that do some well priced ones for low cars.

This may be stating the obvious but I watched an episode of "The Garage" on discovery a while back and a 944 came in for a new clutch with the same problem and after trying everything it turned out to be a bent clutch fork. Sorry if this was no help as I'm no mechanic of any sort and am just learning but I just thought I'd mention it in case it was overlooked.
Although I'm chuffed to bits after fitting a 2nd hand clutch on my 944S for £40 with my father in law (5 days work!) just hope I don't regret the used part option!

Well got the car back, new master and slave cylinders, he fixed the gearbox leak & blead the coolling system as he reckoned that bubbles were causing the low level. Pedal height was much better and travel felt good.

Trouble is that now i have a leak coming from the front (definitely oil) and my coolant level seems to have dropped a bit again! also i'm sure the clutch pedal has reverted to the previous height!!! :evil: do you think this means more trouble or just something he didnt do properly?

Hi mate, not sure about your clutch problem but I know when I did my clutch a couple of months ago I already had an oil leak and while I had the clutch off I replaced the rear main oil seal. Problem solved. Hope you get it sorted soon mate, I know how frustrating it all can be, there always seems to be something but then again how many 20-30 year old Ford, Peugeot, Vauxhall's etc etc do you see knocking about!
P.S I'm forking out a small fortune this monday on the repair of the rust on the wheel arch and sill. Not much help I know but just a quick pick me up and reminder of why we do it. YOU OWN A PORSCHE! :D
