Post subject:  944 Steering Wheel Play

My steering wheel has been making a slight clunk on acceleration after braking. After further examination today I have noticed that if you push fairly hard on the steering wheel it clunks inward a couple of mm (this is obviously what's happening under braking). It pops back out if you pull it (or drive off).

Any suggestions as to what could be wrong or where I should look? All I have checked so far is steering wheel to shaft which is secured tightly!

Cheers

Stuart

Is the wheel itself bolted on tight? Is the steering shaft worn. Two ujs that go past the exhaust manifold. Hold onto one & try & waggle the other. Any play you need a new one. Not had this myself so thats my best guess. Hello by the way.

Firstly Hi & Welcome
Yes as JJ said could be the UJs on the coupling shaft quite common & around 70 quid or so. Possibly the top steering column bush but that is quite a rare issue unlike some other cars I've had!

Thanks for the advice guys. There was some play in a UJ so I got the steering shaft changed but still have this very slight in and out sensation going on. The indy who replaced the steering shaft says it's normal, something about crumpling?

Anyway, my steering has improved with the new shaft but still have the original issue! I've also been told if the bearing at the top of the column was worn the play would be up and down, not in and out.

Confused!! :?

I have a standard wheel and it is tight! I must say the sensation has reduced since the new steering shaft but is definately still there with the odd clunk as I pull away after braking.

Where the shaft that's connected to the steering wheel comes out the bulkhead you can witness about 2mm of in and out play. So the whole thing is moving, not just the wheel.

Finally got to the bottom of it. The circlip at the top of the column wasn't engaged. Popped it back in and all is well! :bounce:

God knows how that wasn't picked up by the indy who had it. Two visits and one steering shaft later......

Glad you got it fixed. With old cars you have to expect the unexpected. Some garages even pork speicalists go for the obvious without looking close enough. Bet you needed the steering shaft anyway & thats an mot fail so your hardly any worse off.

Yes I did need the steering shaft so no harm done. If anything I've learned more! I'll mention it to my indy next time I'm in but won't hold it against him, yet!
