I have just done the pump and belts on my 91 S2, had trouble bleeding it - but borrowed a pressure bleeder now. My question is where does the S2 temp gauge normally sit at, mine sits at or around the first line, so quarter mark. It goes just above and just below. The expantion tank sems to have to much fluid in, should I empty some or will the level sort it self out? The fan isnt kicking in and all the power is there. Your answers are greatly appreciated.......

It should be somewhere between the first and second marks. A new thermostat will probably have yours spot on the half way mark between the lines, but as they get older they open a bit too early and the needle creeps down to the first line where yours currently is. I had a new thermostat 5 years ago and it was bang in the middle, its now just above the first line in normal operation.

The great "where should that gauge sit" discussion!
Clarks says anywhere between the 2 marks is fine - personally I always think any temp gauge is designed so that the needle sits just below halfway - its a psychological thing!
As Paul said new thermostats will pull the operating temp up 5+degrees.
My old S on old stats sat at 80 (first line) my turbo with year old stats sits a quarter block higher - 85 and the fans kick in at about an indicated 92 ish.

Hi,

My temp guage normally sits about 1/3 when I'm on the move. If I'm stuck in traffic, as soon as the needle gets a touch above 1/2 the cooling fan kicks in. Hope this helps.

As for the coolant, I fill it to the min mark when cold. As the cooolant expands a fair bit when hot it will go towards the max mark. Anyone else find this? (Thats if you're header tank hasn't sprank a leak like mine - but thats another tale).

my S sits on the first line, unless in traffic jam when it almost reaches half way before the fan cuts in, it is due a new water-pump and belts soon so it'll also get a new stat

Just under level on my 2.7 (same engine as an S2, essentially).
