Post subject:  S2 radiator expansion tank has sprung a leak - part numbers?

Hi everyone,

The S2 has sprung a leak tonight on the radiator expansion tank. :( I've got two part numbers for the expansion tank 944.106.125.06 and 951.106.025.02. Which is the correct part number for a '89 S2?

By the time I got in from work tonight, all the Porsche parts places had shut so will have to sort it out tomorrow now. Any help with the part numbers will be greatly appreciated.

I assume replacing the header tank is straight forward. A case of removing the hoses attaching it to the new tank and replenishing the coolant accordingly?

Regards,

Ben

Confused it could be either. Going by my list the second part no. has an outlet to the left of the filler. In other words the second part no. has 3 outlets & the first has 2.

The Turbo expansion tank has an extra outlet for the turbocharger cooling pump. It is just to the left of the filler

For the M44.41 engine i.e. S2, PET says:

944 106 125 06 expansion tank

Design911's online price check says £46.41, cheaper than I expected! Almost tempted myself...

My PET shows this fitted to some of the S2s as well.

Hi,

Thanks for all your help. I looked at the PET manual earlier but didn't see the 3rd pipe for the turbo model. Confusingly, the S2 has 3 pipes also. 1 into the side, 1 at the back of the tank and 1 into the neck of the filler cap. I've photographed it but sorry about the size of the picture.

It's now just a case of who has one in stock and can get it to me for Saturday if possible.

The one into the side is just the over flow. Got one for mine from America last year. Only trouble is you need to get the brake res' as well or it will stand out like a saw thumb. Once fitted you can actually see how much coolant you have. 8)

Hi JJ,

Checked the coolant level tonight. Don't seem to have lost to much thankfully. Sorry for being thick but what do you mean by brake res'

Pretty sure that is 125 06 from the pic.

Hi Jim,

I'm going with that part number 944 106 125 06 as you've quoted.

Well, its going to be 50/50 if its right or not.

Hi All,

Thanks for all the input. Collected new expansion tank from OPC Leeds this morning £46.41 + VAT. Tank has now been fitted, leak tested and test drive done. :thumbright: Jobs a goodun'. Only problem is the nice new shiney clean header tank makes the rest of the engine look shabby now! :(

Embarrassingly, the part number was actually stamped into the top of the tank. I just couldn't see it as the expansion tank was dark brown! :)

I'm told a session in the top section of the dishwasher is ideal for cleaning plastic bits like this. Not that I'd ever do anything like that of course :angel4:
