Well Ive had my 944 a month now with no issues other than in the last week or so ive noticed that after going downhill off throttle as soon as i apply the throttle again there is a cloud of bluish oil smoke blown out of the exhaust..... it doesnt seem to smoke under normal driving and has not used drastic amounts of oil since ive owned it, oil pressure is 2.5-3bar at idle even when properly hot and is at 4bar when crusing at about 3-4000rpm. Stem seals? rings? |

Gave mine a full head overhaul from Oldam engine center. Cost £120 with a skim, new guides seals +2 new valves + a turbo head gasket set included. You also need a cam belt but not too bad. Check condition of hydraulic lifters while head is off. Doesn't have to break the bank so shop around. Not a difficult job. |

what grade oil would you recommend for a 150k 944 2.5? it had an oil and filter change before i bought it and when you pull the dip stick the oil looks thin as you like! |

Nothing too light! 20/50 maybe 15/50 if it lives outside & you use it in winter. Will still smoke if the guides are worn though. |

Id chance my arm with 20W-50 (Castrol High Mileage) and see how you usage is affected... |

Mine uses oil, 150miles to the litre driven err.... spiritedly  Heavier oil made absolutely no difference over a 10/40 but I now run Valvoline 15/50 which is a good price & high spec. Not sure I'd run the Castrol high mileage one it is a marketing thing really rather than a different product. I think mine is rings rather than guides & seals & certainly various specialists agree. |

I'd disagree about Castrol High Mileage. Like quite a few old school oils (Castrol Classic, Unipart 20W50), it may have seal swellers in to stop the seals from leaking, something modern oils will happily destroy in most old engines (ever wondered why many 70s classics leak oil from every orifice?) |
