| Post subject: | S2 belt change. |
Hi folks. The time approaches for the belts and tensioners etc. to be done on my S2 Can someone advise me of what exactly needs to be changed , adjusted, replaced etc. The mechanic is a friend but hasn`t done a 944 belt change and i know there`s quite alot involved regarding the S2. Thanks in advance. Martin. |

Thanks in advance. Martin. Not sure I'd want someone learning on my 944 to b honest. There are several special tools needed if the seals need changing & there are a few traps for the unwary. Have a read through Jim's links he has posted. |

Having a belt tensioning tool is handy otherwise ask your specialist if he has one. Getting the balance belt tool (a locking tool) and the flywheel will both come in quite handy. I know it shouldn't be done, but on my car, the balance belt is a litte loose (it's quite slack but the cambelt is fine). How can it be roughly adjusted without the tool? I know I shouldn't do this, but most specialists won't touch my engine with a shot bottom end (seized piston in no.2 bore) and to be honest, I only want to get a couple more miles out the engine as I keep hunting around for another S2 engine. |

I was under the impression that it was paramount that I have tool 9201 in use in order to adjust the belt. Which method have you used for adjusting the balance belt? I assume it's done by only 'just' taking the slack out of the belt. |

Just undo the 17mm lock nut slightly on the adjuster and turn the adjuster clockwise to take up the slack with a large spanner, around 27mm?. On my car the balance belt had been running very very slack for years when I removed the cover, it was so slack it has been bouncing of the water pump pulley, didnt seem to be doing any harm though. Note the balance shaft marks must be aligned and taking up any slack may misaligne the marks. It is quite tricky to get all the marks in the right place and you will need a mirror and alot of patience, but once done the engine is effortless and silky smooooooth. |

Don't forget, if you're a PCGB member there are two tensioning tools free to borrow. |

Paul I was reading about the calibration of the tensioning tools the other day. Is this something you have done? - with the amount they are used and posted I assume you or PCGB have this done? Rich |

Got two tensioning tools here the Gates one & the Arnworx one, more than willing to lend either to anyone who needs them. A lot of the specialists don't use any when you dig! I know a lot of private owners that do the 90 Deg twist job on the longest run as well. |
