Fibre glass is much cheaper and much lighter than the metal Porsche wings, plus they can never ever rust again. Downside is they can take a lot of work to look anywhere near decent (though its sounds like yours have already done this

Im looking at a car that is a SE model registered around in 1990. Strangely the car has LSD etc, but isnt M030. Werent all post 1989 cars M030? It also doesnt have sports seats. My main concern is: Why would someone put fibre glass wings on a car like this? They are sprayed the colour of the car, and if the owner hadnt told me, i wouldnt be able to tell from the pictures. He also mentions that the sills have some surface rust on them. Another concern was that he is keeping the forged SE wheels and will replace with 993 cup3 (turbo style) wheels. Comments please? |

The original wheels are worth quite a bit, make sure you take that into account with what you pay him for it. Would fibre glass be for weight saving? |

The fibre glass wings are probably cheaper than new genuine Porsche wings too. Will the 993 wheels have the correct off set for a 944? |

for some reason fibreglass parts usually come out a slightly diff shade when painted, so just check that they blend well. |

Getting back on track though. Do these wear as well as standard metal panels? Can they be waxed as normal like the rest of the car? Will they fade quicker than the rest of the car? |

Painted by someone who knows what they are doing they can be treated as normal bodywork. They may fade at a slightly different rate to metalwork,but this happens on Porsches anyway with the PU nose & tail. I've fitted themin the past to cars (not Porsches) & they have taken eons to get a good fit. Fine if you are fitting yourself but not funny paying a body guy X pounds an hour to fit. In my experience GRP panels for road use generally aren't hugely lighter than steel. It is only lightweight race panels that are significantly lighter than steel but they aren't hardwearing enough to use for daily use. |
