I've had my 82 944 for over a year and had very little problems with it, just bits that I could sort out easily. Plus I had all the seals done to stop any oil leakage. However I've been driving it a lot in the past few weeks and it seems to have had a bit of a meltdown. Any advice any of you could offer on any of these would be greatly appreciated.

I'm no mechanic and reading wiring diagrams isn't my strong point so forgive me if any of this is obvious:

1: After a few days of the boot randomly popping up whilst driving i shut it and pushed down to keep it shut. Now when i put the key in it just doesn't release even if i pull up hard on it. Can it be released from inside or can the boot pins be removed internally?

2: The rear wiper has ceased working. All the fuses seem in order and the front wipers work fine. I assume it runs on the same relay as the front ones? Is there anything else obvious worth checking?

3: The fans have jammed on full blast! when i try to turn them off the knob won't move. Taking the facia off hasn't revealed an obvious problem but i can't really tell what to do next! Is it possible to just isolate this switch, remove and replace? If so where do i get a replacement.

And finally if anyone who has got a decent seats that would go in a black 944 please let me know because the ones in there now are horrendous.

Thanks in advance for your time.

1. It sounds like the boot has jammed shut, I suspect it needed lubricating and adjusting. Try getting someone to lean down hard on the tailgate whist you turn the key. Otherwise it'll be crawl in the boot & try releasing the mechansim from inside, again whilst someone operates the key.

2. The standard reason for rear wipers to give up the ghost is dodgy wiring where it bends for the tailgate. Have a look for frayed wiring.

3. Pulling the fuse will stop the fans but it sounds like the switch has died. Pull the plug off the back of the switch & see if the fan stops. If it does loads on EBay.

Nic I assume your in Sidcup, if you are come down to a TIPEC meet. Details are here http://tipec.net/region_southeastlondon.php

You assumed wrong! I'm from Sidcup but live up north, I"m a member of the club up here.

Cheers for the advice. I've got my mate coming round to wrestle the boot with me in a few days!

Thanks for the help Jim. It maybe that the wiper fault was caused by the boot slamming then!

Errr just realised! Which fan? Do you mean the cooling fan or the heater blower fan? For the later give Frazerpart a ring on +44 (0)7958 697333
The cooling fan is normally the sensor which is better brought new.

Where abouts up North are you

Thats not melt down. Thats minor electrical problems not untypical of a 20+ year old car. When the clutch goes thats melt down :)
Tailgates are a pain. Had to refurbish mine when I slammed it & broke the seal. (After that it rattled & leaked.) If it's poping up all the time you probably need new pins. They wear with constant use & only new pins will keep it shut. Always close the hatch & then just push it too the last bit until it snecks. Refurbing it is a big job! Be warned. :)

Hi,

I find rubbing a blob of copper grease on the latch pins works wonders every now and again.

Yeah had the tailgate problem on my 86' New pins from frazerpart were the only answer ( I think they are differnt for your year with a slot in them) - they shear off when you try to adjust them so new ones are the answer unfortunatly. Fiddly to set up but a world of difference afterwards. If you set them too tight you can't open easily with the key but the electric remote works ok.
I also had a rear wiper issue - oddly when I checked it out the motor was running but the wiper did not move, turned out to be a loose nut on top of the wiper boss, guess you will be lucky if that simple!
