Sounds about right for a basic belt swap. However it will go up if it needs a water pump, or any idlers or tensioners.

Have the balance shaft belts done too. Altogether you will need two belts, three rollers, and two tensioners. I got them all from Euro Car Parts for under £160. Ask the person doing it for a price for all the parts, and would he mind if you provided your own. I was told that the cambelt would not be 'warranted' unless everything was changed at the same time, so if it snaps they cannot blame a dodgy tensioner or something else.

It's £300 against the cost of a rebuild for not having it done. There's been too many threads recently (one is too many!) about cambelts snapping.

John, the balancer belt has to come off to do the cam belt so unlikely to only be doing the cambelt. As for the tensioners it is extravagant to replace idlers if they are are OK, each is circa £20 or so. Also where do you stop, do you automatically do all the seals & top hats that is another £120 or so? Normal way of doing it is if idlers or tensioners are noisy they get changed otherwise you leave alone.

You're right, I could have saved quite a bit, but I was just told to get them all, purely because of the "it wasn't the belt's fault" if something went wrong down the line. I suppose it's overkill, but at 190000 miles now I'm unlikely to change them again.

I rarely 'open it up'. Too tight fisted to waste the petrol. No, the real reason is that if I drive it carefully the clutch should last a little bit longer, therefore I don't have to lay out all that money so soon for a new one. 190000 miles and it's still got the original clutch in it, and when I left it with my mechanic friend Stewart in October 2007 and asked him to change the clutch, ready to spend the money, he didn't do it. "Doesn't need doing yet" he said. So I spent the money on sweets and still haven't had the clutch done.
