after turning a corner - (it needs to be a decent bend with at least 1/2 a turn of lock on) as i'm winding the lock off i feel a clunk through the steering column of my 1986 944 turbo with 133 k miles on the clock. in service history it shows a new rack has been fitted. i've recently done the track rod ends and this hasnt changed anything.
any ideas - steering column , coupling shaft or rack?

power steering by the way

cheers

Have a look at the upper steering universal joint (and the lower one for that matter). The top one is a bit near the exhaust manifold and tends to get a bit of a pounding as a result.

my money would be on a collapsed engine mount :(

could be either of the above, check to see if the steering shaft comes into contact with the exhaust manifold as you turn the steering wheel

Does it do it when your parked?

If so I would look at the strut top mounts, maybe the bearings have collapsed

You did not mention this at the last club night

i was being friendly - thats my line and i'm sticking to it. i did cut striaght to the chase and ask if she wants to join - she is obviously interested to some extent to turn up in the first place.

i forgot to mention it - got distracted by the curry talk!!!

the clunk is a lot less when parked but i can just notice it.
after greasing the knuckle joint behind the heat shield on the coupling joint it did get better for a while - this leads me to think its this, plus the fact that they are well known to suffer a problem there. the strut top mounts were replaced when i did the poly bushes and koni inserts on the front suspension.

cheers
