I'm starting to get paranoid....

one week of daily driving, got home after short journey and my engine fan (both of them) stayed on for two hours.

I ended up taking the fan relay out, is this faulty or should i be also be checking elsewhere?

To top it off some sodding great big truck spat a stone at my screen and cracked it! - guess that will be expensive too...

Thanks for help

If this is a 944? Probably the thermo switch in the radiator. (Air filter side near top.) Easy to get at & inexpensive. You will need a new washer as well or it will leak. There's a trouble shooter on CLarks garage. But if you start the engine & let it idle you should hear the fan cutting in & out. When you turn the ignition off it runs as lower speed. But should turn off when the temperateture of the coolant drops. Could be the relay but my moneys on the switch. :)

Edit: Hope you have windscreen cover on your insurance. My screen was over a grand. Insurance picked up the bill.

i'll second the rad thermo switch, mine went a couple of years ago, 15 minute job, and minimal coolant loss

With the ignition off and the relay in the fans are going, if i disconnect the thermofan switch they go off - according Clark"s garage this means its the thermofan switch right?

I'm a bit worried about coolant loss when taking it out, will i have to replace it and how do you do this - just refill it? also just noticed CS lowering is cool until you want to jack the car up!

With engine cold. No pressure. There will be little loss. If the caps on air can't get in so it only dribles out.

there should be 2 connectors on the thermoswitch, try pulling them 1 at a time and see, it only turned the fan off when 1 of mine was disconnected, carried on when the other was disconnected, sorry can't remember which 1 kept the fan on

Mine is a triple socket, i think because it has a/c. i can only pull the complete block.

Depends which 944 this is on from memory the early 2.5l have the thermo switch about half way down the radiator and the 3.0l is at the top on the backside, did both my 2.5 and 3.0l and didn't lose much water as long as the engine is not warm/hot. I did both of mine from the top the 2.5 meant removing the airfilter and support bracket the 3.0l I could do from the top with no real problem, however a deep 32mm socket is a Godsend.

Fantastic, sounds like a pretty quick job. mines an S2 so its top drivers side

Just two questions...

What size is the socket? (i'll make sure ive got a long one before i start!)

Can i top up with water if i dont loose too much coolant?

Thanks

Graham

See previous post but from memory I believe 32mm but it needs to be a deep socket so the electrical connectors can fit, I got mine from Halfords for about £2 not the best manufacturer but good enough. Think from memory my S2 took about 30mins to replace the switch.
